Well Patrick, with a surname like that I'm sure Cork would have
to be on your list of places to see.
The best tea worldwide _must_ be Barry's

Yes Bernard, The origin is Cork. It seems that during the great
potato famine, three Barry brothers where caught stealing sheep.
The choice was jail or leave the country. They left and went to
Nashua, N.H. where one became A mortician, the second, a police-
man (a famous one at that !) and the third opened a pool hall.
During prohibition the combination was a winner.

Back to the topic on hand.
Accomodation is available in guest houses for about IR10 per night
which will include breakfast (usually a fry up). Car rental is
expensive. I dont have any figures to hand but it starts around
IR40 per day. The public transport system consists of a rail system
& bus services. The railway serves the major population centres
(Dublin, Cork,Galway,Sligo ....) and town in between. Bus services
are available from most places. Look out where possible for private
bus services as these are usually cheaper and quicker.
As for where to go I have to recommend Donegal (Ok It's my home
place, but it's the nicest place to be bored in October ;-)). Also
a visit to Galway would be a good idea as us Deccies in Galway are
always looking for an excuse to consume porter.
A good idea would be to get the Bord Failte (Irish Bourist Board)
brochure which may have some useful info. Some of our stateside
noters may be able to help there.
If the above text is not too coherent I apologise because it's
Friday morning.
Hope this helps you (at least its getting the note out of a rathole)

Yet another suggestion,
Make sure you call into Morans of the Weir near Galway. I've
just had a lunch there, doz. oysters & a few porters. Will I
sober up at all today?
re < Are there any skunks in Ireland ? >
No. But we have an animal commonly known as "porter consumus" which
can smell quite a bit :-).

Jaysus H. Christmas, I hope not! Although there is one snake in
Ireland...could there be a skunk...no, no, no it'd raise too much of a
stink. They're getting pretty scarce in this neck of the woods (Canada),
thank gawd. My daughter even thinks that a skunk is a black and white
road pizza - she hasn't seen a live one yet.
Sorry about this skunkhole...I'm going back to sleep.

I would recommend that you obtain a current copy of
TOWN AND COUNTRY HOUSES ASSOCIATION GUIDE on arrival in Ireland
It outlines accomodation in B&B's throughout Ireland, including
facilities, price,no. of rooms and a photo of each house is included.
B&B is about #10 as outlined earlier but tends to vary, dearer in
cities and cheaper in the rural areas.
It should be possible to get a room with shower and W.C at very
little extra cost this time of year.Phone ahead and book before
3:00 pm for wider choice.
Eating out is around the #7 to #10 pound per person mark in restaurants
but just as good (if a little less formal) is the bar food available
often in the same hotel for #5 or less!
Pubs are plentiful and the music is great but outside activities
may be curtailed by the weather!!
must go now.........John Dooley .
