-< A Soldiers Song ..... >-
Kevin,
I will type the words in Irish this afternoon if i get the time.
In the meantime here are the words in English.
Soldiers are we whose lives are pledged to Ireland
Some have come from a land beyond the wave
Sworn to be free, no more our ancient sireland
Shall shelter the despot or the slave,
Tonight we man the Barna Beil
In Eire's cause come woe or wail
Tonight we sing a song, a Soldiers song.
It is a rough english version

428.2 | As Gaelige. | GAOV08::MHUGHES | | Thu Sep 01 1988 07:07 | 30 |
| Leaprechauns will do the Gaelic plus a literal type translation.
Sne Fianna Fil, (Soldiers of destiny are we)
at faoi ngeall ag ireann (whose allegiance is pleged to
Ireland).
Buionn d'r slua, (A "few divisions" of our hoarde,)
thar toinn do rnaigh thinn (across the waves have come to us)
Faoi mhid bheith saor, (Sworn, to be free)
i gcoinn r sinsir feasta (and [free] on behalf of our descendents
forever )
N fhilfear faoin tril (We will not remain under tyranny
n faoin tril nor yoke)
Anocht, a theans sa bearna baol (Tonight we man the gap of death)
Le gceann r geal (for the well-being of our people)
Chun bs n saol (To live or die)
Le guna ag screach (Amid guns firing)
Le lamhach na bpilir (Amid, bullets flying)
Seo libh canaigh Amrhrin na bFiann (We sing the soldier's anthem).
The phonetic sounds are not like their spellings.
The English version differs somewhat from the Gaelic meaning because
its not possible to convey the idiom across the language barrier.
Snakes are tuning it up for Sunday next.

Watch out for it next Sunday. The GAA in their infinite wisdom
have decided to update the image of the big day and the Artane
Boys Band will MIME the music. Bit daft in my opinion to have
all those young fellas marching around holding an instrument
looking as if they are playing. What a waste of talent. I hope
the recording screws up on them.

| Dermot,
Kevin's asleep. Unlike the song "the west's asleep", it should be
"Kevin's asleep".
