422.0. "The Irish team for the Olympics" by FNYFS::AUNGIER (Remember the good old days) Wed Aug 17 1988 04:06

As the Olympics approach and I have not been in contact with the
Irish athletic scene for some years, could someone please let me
know who is representing Ireland in as many sports as possible and
what are the changes of gold.

    re. .2

I had it all set but "Van the Man" had to cancel so I figured that
it would be a flop without him.

Besides since keVin and I have never been to one of those Piss-Ups
we wouldn't know who to invite. 8*)!!!!

P.S. keVin has assumed all responsibilities for entertainment events
that are sponsored by American/Irish people. ho-ho-ho.

Just invite the Irish Olympic team.......very presigious!!!!

Van's cancellation - No problem - we can just play the tape over &
    over & over.........close our eyes & pretend.

Next summer you may be ?"absent"?.......does this mean it may be
    postponed until 1990???

You of the genus Struthio, (long bear neck & powerful legs), have
courage, head out of sand, (or was that "ear out of ashtray"?), and
    get on with it!!!!!!!!

422.5Irish Seoul ....STEREO::BURNSTipp will be great in 88'Mon Sep 05 1988 11:1648

    	And the answer is ....

IRELAND NAMES SEOUL TRACK SQUAD ..

Dublin - Ireland has announced its track and fielf squads for
the Seoul Olimpics. Twelve men and five women athletes were named
to the team. There were few surprises exept for Jonh Treacy deciding
to run only the marathon. Marcus O'Sullivan, definitely the man
of the moment, dubles up in the 800 and 1500 meters. John Doherty
and Frank O'Mara go in the 5000 meters with the third place being
    left vacant.

The full squad is - MEN:

    	Marcus O'Sullivan (800/1500m)
    	Frank O'Mara (5000m)
    	John Doherty (5000m)
    	T.J. Kearns (110m Hurdles)
    	Brendan Quinn (Steeplechase)
    	Jim McDonald (20k Walk)
    	Dick Hooper (Marathon)
    	John Woods (Marathon)
    	Sean Treacy (Marathon)
    	Carlos O'Donnell	(Decathlon)
    	Terry McHugh (Javelin)
    	Connor McCullough	(Hammer)

    	WOMEN: -

    	Barbara Johnson (400m Hurdles)
    	Mary Keenan-Buckley	(3000m)
    	Monica Joyce (1000m)
        Marian Rollins-Murphy	(Marathon)
    	Ailish Smith (Marathon)

It is likely that a third runner will be added to the team
with the selection being between Eamonn Coghlan and Paul O'Callaghan.

I was wondering whey Me_Haul Foley chose to enter this note
under the Irish Olympic Team header, but now I understand.

It's only ever four years that he can find a girl willing to
be seen with him. No wonder it's happening in Europe and not

Would anybody be kind enough to give me the times for the Track and
Field events featuring the Irish contestants. Here in Canada the
focus, naturally enough, is on the Canadian content, so we hear
    little of the Irish contingent.

    Thks.
