413.0. "A true story" by XCUSME::KING (Give me a Challenge) Fri Jul 29 1988 22:34
Here's a story of differences.
A few years ago a group of young folk singers from Derry, Northern
Ireland visited the Saint Bonaventure Parish in Manomet, MA. My
parents took in a couple of the kids. There were about 21 of them
all together ranging in age from 13 to 18, boys and girls. They
are part of the Long Tower Folk group.
It was their first time in America and they had been saving their
money for a while to afford the trip over. Great singers too.
They recorded an album here in Boston and Hanover. I think it was
Hanover.
So my parents had two of the boys with them at their house at the
beach. One day they go to the bank and little Peter Clifford sees
a sign on the wall of the bank advertising for IRA's. He's astounded
the bank would do such a bold and brazen thing. He says "The cheek
of 'em advertising for the IRA in a bank!" So I guess my mom had
to explain what an IRA is in America. He felt better after that.
I was glad Peter came over with his older sister Margaret! That
was about the only thing on my mind at the time, Irish girls. Come
to think of they still are. Irish women are the finest women in
the world!!!
