Another Van Morrison fan signing in...

Excellent record with powerful vocals from Van. Carrickfergus in
particular is outstanding, as is The Star of the County Down. Very
lively versions of Marie's Wedding (heel for heel and toe for toe)
and I'll Tell my Ma has the Chieftains playing like a Shankill Road
band around this time of year! Raglan Road is good, but it's hard
to get the late Luke Kelly's version out of the head. Another
highlight is the bilingual song, with Van singing in English and
a member of the Chieftains singing in Irish. A momentous cultural
    statement.

The two original Van Morrison songs are also well done. The title
track, which for me is an emigrant's lament gets excellent backing
from the Chieftains and the playout at the end is straight out of
    Astral Weeks.

Yes a mighty piece of vinyl, indeed!!

Highlight for me is "Ta mo cleamhnas deanta" where Kevin
Cunniffe sings the original "as Gaeilge" and The Man translates
in English for the next verse - Great Stuff!!!
I thought on some of the slower numbers like Carrickfergus that
Van's bluesy/soul style doesn't quite suit on occasion.

Makes you wonder when you hear the results of the combined force
of a "left footed" blues singer from East Belfast and a bunch of
traditional musicians from the South (except Derek Bell who is
also from Belfast, of course) what could be achieved through more
    harmony North and South

Not having heard the whole album, just some tracks on the radio
I must admit it is yugh. Van the man manages to kill some quite
respectable folk songs. He was on telly the other night (along with
Derek Bell on piano) and again managed to kill some songs.

    Overall impression, - Boring.

    I'm somewhere in the middle.

I don't think that Van "manages to kill some quite respectable
folk songs", but I have to agree that his R&Beezy voice doesn't
quite match the feel of the songs.

I find the album enjoyable to listen to, but I don't expect to
    listen to it very often.

Regarding the geo-political mixture, it's not like this hasn't
happened before. Has it been that long since Tommy Makem was with
    the Clancy Brothers?

There was an interview with Paddy Moloney of the Chieftains on Saturday
Night Folk, a regular program on RTE Radio 1 and he said that we
will see a lot more of the Morrison/Chieftains marriage. They have
been touring Britain with Van doing his thing followed by the
Chieftains and then the combination to "fantastic receptions".
Paddy also said they got a lot of stick from purists/begrudgers
when they started out first and it's no different now that they've
    done something unorthodox.

Sorry Dermot, but I think this is the SECOND WORST I have ever heard...
"Van the Man" ruined most/all of the traditional songs, and
destroyed "Carrickfergus". Even without the singing, I do not
think that the Chieftains were "up to par" either.

While listening to the tape, the common thought that crossed
my mind was one with a cat having its tail pinched under the rocker
of an old rocking chair ... :-) OWWWWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOo

OK now I'll add my two cents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've got to second keVin's point. The tape was not what I consider
good listening music. I could see "van" teaming up with the POUGES
the screaming he calls singing clearly lacks any sort of character.

But then what the hell do I know......I'm still tring to learn

406.8MADAME GEORGE SAY....FSLPRD::KSULLIVANWed Jul 27 1988 13:1343
Ah sure, would you doubt them? The purists and begrudgers / Burns
and Culbert. If it isn't Christy singing Lisdo....Lisdoo....Lisdoonvarna,
...then it just isn't Irish music. It would give you a bad turn listening
    to them.
This is a Van Morrison album, with the Chieftains playing backing
(which I consider to be a great improvement for them), NOT a
    Chieftains album with Van singing.
If you are not a Van Morrison music lover (THEM, TUPELO HONEY, MOONDANCE,
ASTRAL WEEKS, CELTIC RAY..ETC....ETC...ETC...), then it would be
difficult to appreciate what he's doing here. He's just interpeting some
Northern Irish (mostly) songs in his own unique style. He's never given
a rattling damn about the critics / knockers in the past, he's not
likely to start now. I guarantee you it was not his intention to
make a good ol' sing-along ".....and I woke in California...." record,
that many people who bought it, seemed to have expected. Every album
he's made in the last 20-25 years has been a GEM. One of Ireland's
truely great gifts to the world.

As regards the continuing "marriage", no, I doubt it. Van never
hangs around in the same area for too long, there is always
something new to be done. This was probably just a pet project. Paddy
Moloney might like to think so, but then he would!!!!
(MATT MOLLOY COME BACK, ALL IS FORGIVEN)!!

And of course it was inevitable that the poor ol' Pogues would have
to be dragged into all this. Again, a lack of understanding of what
they're all about, (But I'll save that rave for another day).

Suggestion: Listen to the album for what it was meant to be, not as you
expected / wanted it to be??? And if you don't like Van Morrison......
    ......OCHON.......OCHON........ It's your loss!!

P.S. Kevin, is this what you meant when you suggested I write something
to "stir it up" a bit?!?!?

Anyway, you all should be listening to BLUEGRASS.....when in Rome.....

KSULLIVAN and D_OSULLIVAN have rightly done us in. We should bury
our heads in sand that way we'll not be a target for abuse from these
    AMATEUR critics.
You and I on the other hand having had the opportunity to sing along
with the likes of Tommy Makem, Liam Clancy, Christy Moore, Patrick St,
Alton and Robbie O'Connell are said to have no appreciation for
    true Irish music.
I guess that goes to show you just what they know. They should
become food critics because CLEARLY their taste is in their mouth
and they must be using their ears for ashtrays or some other usefull

Don't you just love these replies that have absolutely nothing to
do with anything that has gone before. Totally incongruous. Great!!

Horslips were a QUINTET though, you forgot about Barry Devlin, singer
and bass player. I saw them live a couple of dozen times in Ennis,
Lahinch, Limerick, Dublin and Cork. One of the best teenage dance bands
ever. (Hall Of Mirrors, Furniture, Bim Istigh Ag Ol, Dearg Doom,
Silver Spear Etc.) Ah yes, those were the daze.

I have often argued, though it be against my nature to do so, with
the people who claimed that it was Planxty who turned the youth
of Ireland back on to Irish traditional music (Traditional/ Folk revival),
that it was Horslips who were really responsible, but never got the
credit. They created the intrest in bands like Planxty, Skara Brae,
Sweeny's Men, Clannad & De Danann.

Though in all honesty, after the first 2/3 albums, they went to hell,
but for those first few years, they kept us dancing!!!!!!

isn't life that much richer for all of its' inaccuracies,
    inconsistencies, and incongrutities?

    ref;19 one million pardons !

I suspect that I had ignored Barry as he has since sold his soul
to the vagaries of the video monster....I believe he terms himself
a "director" these days! I concur that a strong case can be made
attributing the "celtic revival" to Horslips, and that is the kernel
of my segue into this specific topic. I would also contend that
it was the melding of the two much varied styles, (ie.
rock&traditional) accomplished so successfully by Horslips, so long
ago which has since led to the numerous experimental "fusion"
bands (ie.Moving Hearts, Clannad, Gary Moore latest, ah yes, even
those Scots from Big Country) mixiny their musical metaphors. Even
now we see exotic mixes which in the long form can only enrich our
experience, witness Paddy Moloney's desire to play with everyone!

So, I trust without too strained an effort it"s possible to connect
with this very erudite and esteemed topic a singular thread of melodic
    memories!

I'm not sure if it is something they (kevinz + ksullivan) are smoking
or maybe it's just all this rain that is bringing them out
And they are talking about weird things like horse's lips and stuff.

Hell back in the old days we used to call them horse's asses and I
still remember what the roads looked like after the parade through
downtown. Full of big sims-round balls of hay and other things and they
    sure did smell funny.

from this mundane and predictible workday world to assume the fully
vested position of road manager, (p.s. that's "roadie" for all you
ancient correspondents!) on the just-heralded "Horslips 1988-Revival

conceivable venue in the civilized world, (yes, keVin, that DOES

Shure it all goes back to that mighty night in Boston when keVin

Well anyway I did hear a comment, purPORTERly coming from the Claraeman

slam dancing but that it was definitely better than 5 pints!!!

For my first official duty I think I'll go back through this file

Then I'll go back and look again and delete anything I think is
    abuseive.

Then I'll go through it for a last time and combine all thats left into
    one topic and call it

Ah lets see now what would be a good name ya I'll call it OPEN ISSUES

And then I'll make myself the only moderator and make up some new
rules like......................Any one who has a K as the first
letter in their name cannot enter anything in the file. Boy-o-Boy

Now Paddy, a litle test. A mans name. 3 letters. Begins with a "B".
Ends with a "B". What is it ?

I would suggest that perhaps either the state of State aid grants
to the Western Health Board, or even the condition of EC agricultural
grants to dairy farms in East Galway might constitute worthy topics
to bring this highly irrational, irrevent, and irrelevant crack

    Leaprechauns have a messy solution.

TO get rid of Burns is not going to be easy.

Here is one suggestion: Take him to the top of the John Hancock
building. Tie an elasticated rope to his ankles and throw him over
side of the building. Make sure the rope is three inches longer
than the height of the building minus the height of (K)eVin Burns.

    The result :

Well as I said he is hard to get rid of.

However this would mean that he would at least be a bit shorter, a bit
messy on one end, and he'd have his head up his ass.

...................Come to think of it, he be much the same as he
is now, lets forget the whole idea. :-) :-)

    Mike,
There is only one problem with your solution. If keVin was
any shorter, it would be virtually impossible to tell the difference
between Paddy & himself. And they already create enough confusion!!!!

But it is reassuring to know that people are contemplating this
    all but serious problem.

Thank you to Kevin "Planet Earth" Burns for putting me in the right
note....I find all your criticisms profound.

I liked the album, myself. Although, on Carrickfergus, I found myself
wondering why a singer with twenty years experience doesn't know
his own range....someone must have been pinching his privates....

Good luck to all of you in your new careers as music critics.

Well, seeing as this note is in some small way related to Van the
Man, ye may be interested to see that he is - finally - getting
some small part of the recognition he so richly deserves. And yes
I am serious about him deserving it.

Anyway, Rolling Stone has issued its list of the best 100 singles
of the last 25 years and The Man is in their with G-L-O-R-I-A and
    'Brown-Eyed Girl'.

Heres to more of the same.

Did you know that when Van wrote this song way back then the
original title and lyric was 'Green Eyed Girl'!!! However the
record company/producer said EUCH no way Jose, so they changed
it to 'Brown Eyed Girl' instead and it took off.

According to Rolling Stone, it had been called
'Brown _Skinned_ Girl' - my emphasis. I guess the main thing is
that it was different and The Man changed it for the better.

Maybe he's not as difficult as the media would have you believe.

The Chieftains and Van Morrison are currently on tour and we got
to see last Saturday's concert at the Stadium in Dublin. Even though
I say it myself, it was a great show.

Part 1 was 30-35 minutes of the Chieftains playing in the usual
way - excellent set, if too short.

Part 2 had Van Morrison and his regular band playing for most of an
hour. Derek Bell of the Chieftains accompanied on piano. Van did
say he tried to get Phil Coulter, but no luck! Morrison delivered
an excellent set with powerhouse vocals and directed his band "into
    the mystic."

Part 3 then had the rest of the Chieftains trooping back on stage
for a good-humoured set which consisted of the songs from the Irish
Heartbeat album. All sides, including the audience, enjoyed the
    crack.

Finally, two encores, the last of which had a dead straight cover
of Ray Charles' "I can't stop loving you", which was only incredible.

and we sailed and we sailed...
