What the London tabloids had to say about the Republic
of Ireland's 1-0 victory over England in the European
Cup. Taken from Monday's Irish Press without permission
of author Colm Kenna (but I'm sure he won't mind ;-).

		    FLEET STREET 'JOKE' ENGLAND.

The English soccer team gets a second pasting today,as
the London tabloids puor scorn on their performance
against Ireland in the opening game of the European
	Cup finals.

"RUBBISH!" screams the back-page headline on the English
edition of the Mirror, while the Sun says: "On your bike
Robson!" to the British team manager.
"A disgrace to the name of England" is the Sun's headline
on their inside two-page spread, which quotes Irish manager
Jack Charlton as saying "We'll drink the whole place dry"

"You're a joke!" the back page of the Sun tells the
English team (the Irish edition has a different headline -
	- "Jack of Hearts"). Inside the English edition, there's a
large two-page rebuke - "England's Jackasses", this being
swopped for "Green Giants" in the Irish copies.

"No joke,Bobby!",the Mail says in all seriousness to the
English manager."Irish are laughing as English stars give
	game away."

All give a seperate "quote" piece to Jack Charlton in his
hour of glory. "Irish Jack is smiling", says the Express,
which predicts with determination "We're not done for yet"

The Russians were very fortunate to come away with a draw after
Ireland dominated th game. Ronnie Whelan scored the goal of the
tournament so far. John Aldridge missed a sitter. Galvin was taken
down in the penalty area but no penalty given. The Russians scored
their goal against the run of play.
