391.0. "Tattoo or Gathering of the Clans?" by CLUSTA::SEVERIN () Thu Jun 09 1988 14:58

    Do anybody out there have any information on a Gathering of the
    Clans and a Tattoo that take place somewhere in Canada (Ontario?)
    or upper-state New York every summer?

    I remember seeing a listing of these events a couple of years ago,
    but, for the life of me, I can't recall where I saw it.

    I'm thinking about taking some vacation time, and listening to the
    pipes is not a bad way to spend it, wouldn't you agree?

391.2More on the Highland EventsCSC32::MA_BAKERTue Jun 14 1988 16:528
    I think the one you were looking for might be the Fergus Highland games,
    August 12-13. The 43rd Annual Highland Games. Canadian Gold Medal
    for Piping competition, Tattoo, the usual piping, drumming, dancing,
    drum amjor and athletics competitions, parade, vendors, North American
    Tug-of-War championships, Alex Beaton concert, massed bands, massed
    fling, "one of the top 100 events in North America for 1988" is how they
    are billing it. Information: PO box 3, Fergus, Ontario, N1M 2W7.
    1-519-843-5140; 1-519-843-5020.
391.3Thanks! More info?CLUSTA::SEVERINMon Jun 20 1988 14:358
    Thanks very much for the information! What is your source for the
    other events you listed in 391.1? I'm interested in attending
    some of these events and would like to contact the organizers
    for information.

    Diane

391.4They are usually a lot of funCSC32::MA_BAKERMon Jun 20 1988 15:4512
    I pulled the calendar out of the May-June issue of "The Highlander"
    and picked just those events that might be interesting for folks
    in the Northeast. The calendar does not give contact names. Some
    of them (like the Fergus Games) run individual ads and/or articles
    in the Highlander, giving more information and contact names. You
    or I could search the ads and articles for the ones you are interested
    in, but it might be easier to determine which ones you want to attend
    and call the appropriate town's Chamber of Commerce or even their
    local newspaper for more information. If I can be of help in searching
    the Highlander, please let me know.

391.5Where can I buy "The Highlander"?CLUSTA::SEVERINWed Jun 29 1988 13:458
    Thanks for the information, Marge. I'll try contacting the
    Chambers of Commerce.

    BTW, where can I get a copy of the Highlander? Is it available
    in either the Boston or Nashua areas?

    Diane

391.6THe Highlander MagazineCSC32::MA_BAKERThu Jun 30 1988 17:0240
    The Highlander magazine is published bi-monthly (7 times yearly) out
    of Chicago. I would hope that some library in the NH/Boston areas
    would have a subscription. The address for subscription/ciruculation
    is PO Box 44044, Chicago, IL. 60644. It costs $11.50 a year, $1.75
    an issue. Might be that the Scottish import shops in your area
    might also carry individual issues. I really enjoy the magazine,
    it gets into historical/cutural stuff, neat ads, the events calendar,
    coverage of the various Highland games/dance meets/etc.

    There is another publication that might interest you, but I dont
    have any address or anything, but I know it also includes events
    calendars. This is The Scottish-American, from the Scottish Heritage
    USA, and it is in a newspaper format. You might also find it in one or
    another library in your area.

    I dug out the May/June issue again, and found the following info
    on some of the events in .1 above:

    Scottish Heritage Day, Sunday, June 26 in Ottawa, admission free,
    the Billings Estate. Info: 613-564-1363.

    Edinburgh Tatto, Aug 12-Sep 3, Info: Tattoo Office, 22 Market Street,
    Edinburgh EH1, 1QB, Scotland. 011-44-31-225-1188 from USA.

    miles south of Boston. Info: PO Box 201, Boston, MA. 02114.
    617-834-9147.

    Grandfather Mountain, July 7-10, Linville, NC. Info: PO Box 1676,
    Johnson City, TN. 37605  615-928-2191

    2 weeks of August. Tuition $125. Info: The Director, Gaelic Summer
