    There are three main distilling locations in Ireland.
    1. Middleton in Co. Cork the center of production for Jameson, Paddy,
       Powers, Mulligan, Midleton old Reserve ($200 a bottle) etc.
       They pay thier taxes to the Irish Republic.
    2. Antrim in the North of Ireland where Bushmills run the oldest
       distillery on the planet. THey make Bushmills, Black Bushmills,
       and an special Bushmills export (the finest whiskey made).
       They pay their taxes to the British state.
    3. Connemara where they make poit�n (pronounced putcheen), a very
       special distillation from barley. This is the oldest whiskey
       industry in the world (not the oldest distillery). It is also
       the source of the strongest liquor known to mankind. The product
       has excellent attributes of healing and is an excellent rubbing
       alcohol for rheumatism. Their distillaries are always changing.
       They don't pay taxes to any state.
    
    Snake has drank it too (often).

    Re .0: The output of Bushmills distillery includes 3 different
    products: a) the regular Bushmills (don't know how old it is),
    b) the older form of the same product, known as Blackbush, which
    is bottled at 12 years of age, and c) during the last 2 or 3 years,
    they've been releasing what's known as Bushmills Malt, a single
    malt whiskey bottled at 10 years of age and thrice distilled as
    most of the Irish whiskeys are, while most Scotch whiskies are
    twice distilled (I think only 2 of them are thrice distilled).
    The Jameson can also be easily found in 16 year old bottling which
    is among the best of Irish whiskeys (disclaimer: this opinion is
    strictly my own and I'm prepared to concede that other people may
    think otherwise ;^) ).
    Most Irish whiskeys are not single or vatted malts, but also include
    a small proportion of other spirit(s) like wheat, rye, etc..., varying
    with the brands, while the blended Scotch whiskies are a blend of
    a proportion varying between 20% and 50% of malt spirit with maize
    spirit (which I personally don't like). I'm told there are two brands
    of pure maize whiskies but I never had the occasion to taste them.
    My own favorite among Irish whiskeys are Bushmills malt, Blackbush,
    Jameson and Powers. I must say I'm not very fond of Tullamore Dew.
    As for poitin (or poteen in the English transcription), it comes
    in very different strengths, ages and qualities, depending on its
    origin, but is usually very young, very strong and (depending on
    the type of still used and the skills of the producer) sometimes
    liable to kill you instantly or leave you a moron with a vegetable
    in place of brain (I know it, I survived...)

    Thanks for the information on the whiskeys.  It was most enlightening.
    Along similar lines, I like to drink Glenfiddich (sp?) as a scotch
    sipping whiskey.  Anything else available that is better?

If you have the money, try Ambassador 25 year old Scotch.  Goes down like water.

    Re .5, .6: Ambassador is a very good whisky, but it's a blended
    one, while Glenfiddich is a single malt. Glenfiddich is a very good
    product, unfortunately bottled at least 3 or 4 years too young.
    Except for a few Wedgwood(sp?)-made bottles containing 25 year old
    spirit (they matured only 3 casks of it and released it for the
    distillery's Centennial) and costing about 125 Pounds each,
    they only bottle it at 8 year of age, I find it still harsh in my
    throat. Depending on your taste (mostly, how peaty you prefer it),
    there are several better single malts which can be found easily.
    Among the light peat taste, you could try Glenmorangie (10 year
    old, easy to find in the US), Cardhu (12 year old) or, one of the
    best of this kind, Glen Grant (any bottling older than 10 years,
    it's bottled at least at 12 different ages). A little stronger,
    try Knockando (bottled at 12 years of age but it carries the year
    of production on the bottle) or, better, Macallan (the 12 years old
    bottling). If you like it very peaty, try Bowmore (12 year old),
    Laphroaig (10 year old) or Highland Park (my favorite, 12 year old
    too).

    Note: Here again this is a strictly subjective note, other people
    may prefer different brands and I cannot be sure that YOU will like
    the same Scotch as I do.

    Cardhu, Laphroig for single.
    
    Uisgebagh [sp?] for a blend. [Please pardon the spelling...when
    I want to puchase it, I just look for the little brown crock in
    the red velvet tin...]

    I have a bottle of Cardhu at home and I recommend it as a very good
    whisky.  Glenmorangie is also my favourite.
    
    Snake could get a red nose if I don't rein in dear.
    

    Chivas Regal is a very nice Scotch whiskey but alas only certain
    people in the Dublin office would be able to afford it but more
    of this person in a separate note !!!!

    Recently my parents visited the Emerald Isle and my father has fallen
    in love with a whiskey called "John Powers(?)."  Since he has tried
    it, he has stopped drinking scotch and would like to switch to Powers.
    Unfortunately, this whiskey cannot be found in Florida (where he
    lives.)  
    
    I would be eternally greatful if I could get him a bottle or two
    for Christmas.  Is there anyone across the pond who would be willing
    to pick some up and ship it to me?  Naturally, I'd assume all costs
    involved.

    bought some.  I think I got it at Julio's in Westboro, MA.  I'll

    Yes, Powers is available in the NH State Liquor Stores, and I believe
    in most large Boston area liquor stores.  If you know the importer (I
    can't remember offhand) you can probably get your liquor store to
    get some for you.  If not, let me know and I can have it shipped
    for you.  Michael

    	Dreyfus, Ashby & Co.
    	New York, NY
    
    	...it doesn't say sole distributers, so it may be available
    from another distributer too.

    I'll be over 28th Nov to 9th Dec.   If you can't find any in the US,
    send me MAIL before the 28th Nov and I'll try and bring a bottle across
    (Assuming I can find it in England.)

    I called the distributor and they haven't imported Power's into

    Since I started this note about 2 years ago, I thought it only fair to
    reactivate it.  I was able to find some Power's Irish Whiskey (thank
    you Colin Walters), but after 2 years, my supply is now gone.
    
    Is there anyone willing to pick up about 5 bottles of Power's and let
    me know the best way to get them?  According to all my sources, this
    stuff simply can not be found in the US anymore.
