Well another Saint Patrick's Day parade has come and gone in Southie. This year was different, it was tame. Since the Boston Police avowed they would arrest anybody drinking in public alot of the troublemakers stayed home or at their favorite Pub. I brought my sister and her friend who are both 14 to the parade this year and I was a little afraid at first as we approached Broadway Station on the Red line. But upon emerging from the subway I realized that there weren't drunks enmasse this year as I've seen in past years. There were alot of natives there. Those who call Southie their home. They'll always be there and always have. The parade is after all for them, its their neighborhood. But this year's parade didn't seem as big as previous years' did. That was puzzling to say the least. But it was fun the be there just the same. Bryan

It's a Friday afternoon noting kind of a day.... Re: .0 Your note caused me to think about the two parades in Dallas and their reputations. In Dallas there are two St. Patrick's Day parades, sort of. One is the Official St. Patty's parade held in downtown Dallas and held on St. Patty's Day regardless of which day of the week it falls on. The other is held on the Saturday before St. Patty's, and has little, if any. "Irish or St. Patrick's" association. People just walk down the street drinking, causing trouble, using the closest tree or bush as a restroom. Also, this parade is held on Greenville Avenue in North Dallas, not in city centre. The problem is the second one gets all the d*** publicity. This year, about 3 weeks before the parade the City of Dallas made them pay a $20,000 deposit because of their past behavior. When they couldn't raise the money the papers and TV said that "The St. Patty's Day Parade is cancelled". So, I kept hearing from friends: "It's too bad you and Michelle and Katie (our Irish Wolfhound) won't be in the parade!" or "Did you hear the parade was cancelled?" Anyway, it was very frustrating how the media was so ignorant (or whatever you want to call it) that they couldn't be a little more specific about which parade they were talking about. JO'R | |||||
