335.0. "PATRICK STREET & ALTAN....THE CONCERT OF THE YEAR!!!" by MARCIE::KSULLIVAN () Tue Mar 01 1988 15:14

IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT I WRITE A SHORT NOTE RE: UPCOMING PATRICK STREET
CONCERT IN THE SOMMERVILLE THEATRE, AS MANY PEOPLE DIDN'T KNOW MUCH
    ABOUT THE BAND.

    PATRICK ST.
    ------------
KEVIN BURKE: PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST FIDDLERS IN THE WORLD. HAS
PLAYED WITH THE ARLO GUTHERIE BAND, REPLACED TOMMY PEOPLES AS THE
BOTHY BAND'S FIDDLER AND HAS PLAYED ON NUMEROUS OTHER ARTISTS ALBUMS.
HAS TWO SOLO ALBUMS ...IF THE CAP FITS... & UP CLOSE
TWO BEAUTIFUL ALBUMS WITH MICHEAL O DOMHNAILL...PROMENADE & PORTLAND.
AN ALBUM WITH JACKIE DALY ... EAVESDROPPER.
AND TO TOP IT ALL OFF HE HAS A FANTASTIC SENSE OF HUMOUR WHICH PREVAILS
    THROUGHOUT THE CONCERT.

JACKIE DALY: PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST BOX PLAYERS IN THE WORLD.
HAS PLAYED WITH DE DANANN. MORE LIKELY TO BE FOUND IN A CORNER OF
PUBS LIKE MICK TAYLORS, QUAYS, NAUGHTONS,IN KINVARA, ANYWHERE IN MILTOWN
FOR WILLIE CLANCY WEEK, KENMARE FOR CIBEAL AND MANY MANY MORE THROUGHOUT
THE COUNTRY. AND IF YOU'VE EVER BEEN LUCKY ENOUGH TO STUMBLE UPON
SUCH A SESSION, YOU DON'T FORGET THEM.
ALBUMS: AN EXELENT ALBUM WITH SEAMUS CREAGH.
TWO WITH SEAMUS & MANUS MCGUIRE (BUTTONS & BOWS) ONE HAS
    JUST BEEN RELEASED - CLASSICS.
ALSO APPEARS ON MANY OTHER ARTISTS ALBUMS.

ANYONE WHO HAS HEARD THE MILTOWN SESSION TAPE KNOWS WHAT I MEAN!!!

ARTY MCGLYNN: BRILLIANT GUITAR PLAYER. HAS DONE SEVERAL TOURS AS
GUITAR PLAYER WITH VAN MORRISON'S BAND.(AND YOU DON'T PLAY WITH
VAN UNLESS YOUR SPECIAL).ACTUALLY THEY JUST FINISHED A TOUR OF
IRELAND A FEW WEEKS AGO. GREAT SHOW IN LEISURELAND BY ALL ACCOUNTS.
HAS ALSO WORKED EXTENSIVELY WITH MAURA O'CONNELL. AGAIN HE IS TO
BE FOUND PLAYING ON NUMEROUS OTHER PEOPLES' ALBUMS.
HE HAS ONE BEAUTIFUL SOLO ALBUM....MCGLYNN'S FANCY.

ANDY IRVINE: FOUNDER MEMBER OF THE LEGENDARY GROUP PLANXTY. PLAYS
BAZOUKI, MANDOLIN, GUITAR AND SINGS. HIS SONGS COVER A WIDE RANGE
OF SOCIAL, POLITICAL & HUMOUROUS TOPICS.(WOODY'S "TOM JOE", HIS
OWN VERSION OF SACCO & VANZETTI, WILLIAM TAYLOR, PATRICK STREET
& OTHERS). APART FROM THE PLANXTY ALBUMS, HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR
THAT 1976 CLASSIC ALBUM WITH PAUL BRADY.
A SOLO ALBUM .."RAINY SUNDAYS..WINDY DREAMS.

I SAW THEIR SHOW AT U.N.H. IN DURHAM LAST SUNDAY NIGHT,(WHAT A NIGHT)
THEY'RE IN MIGHTY FORM, AND LOOKING FORWARD TO THE SOMMERVILLE SHOW AS
ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TOUR.

WHAT MORE CAN I SAY ??? THESE ARE FOUR OF IRELAND'S MASTER
MUSICIANS!!!!....(& COMEDIANS TO BOOT).....MISS THEM AT YOUR PERIL.

AS AN ADDED BONUS, WITH THEM FOR THE SOMMERVILLE SHOW ARE A GROUP
OF MUSICIANS - ALTAN. INCLUDES FRANKIE KENNEDY & MAIREAD NI MHAONAIGH,
TWO OF IRELAND'S FINEST YOUNG MUSICIANS. THIS PAIR HAVE JUST RELEASED
THEIR SECOND ALBUM - THESE PEOPLE ARE WORTH SEEING ON THEIR OWN......
THIS IS GOING TO BE THE BEST SHOW OF IRISH MUSIC TO HIT THIS AREA
    THIS YEAR. TRUST ME!?!?!?!

A SECOND AND VERY IMPORTANT POINT IS THAT THESE PEOPLE COME OVER
HERE ONCE/TWICE A YEAR BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY IRISH HERE. APART
FROM THE QUALITY OF THEIR MUSIC, THEY DESERVE AND NEED YOUR SUPPORT.
(IF THE CROWDS ARE POOR THEN THE PROMOTERS ARE RELUCTANT TO BRING
THEM BACK - THEN EVERYONE LOOSES OUT)!!!
RECENT TURNOUTS FOR DE DANANN AT THE BERKLEY CENTRE (HALF FULL),THE
SHOW WAS EXELENT - DOLORES WAS IN GREAT FORM.
MOLONEY,O'CONNELL & KEANE (HALF EMPTY) PEOPLE WHO ATTENDED ARE STILL
    TALKING ABOUT IT - BREATHTAKING.
MARY BLACK - FAR FROM FULL - GREAT PERFORMANCE.

IRISH MUSIC IS BEST WHEN SEEN LIVE - ATMOSPHERE, HUMOUR, CRACK (SURE
YOU COULDN'T BEAT IT WITH A STICK)!!!

YOUR MOTHERS & FATHERS, GRANNIES & GRANDADS, AUNTS & UNCLES, BROTHERS

& YAHOOOOING !!!! ( AM I OVER DOING THIS????). LET IT BE THE

Yes, I'm interested in seeing this show. March can be such a dreary
month with St Patrick's day the only saving grace.

How can I go about getting tickets? Also, can anyone give specific
    directions to the theater?

After all, he did help me get tickets to this great concert, and
he did lead me from Boston to Sommerville.

It was nice meeting most of ye, albeit for a shortish time.

What did you do to poor Kevin (Burke) that led him to admit
knowing ye. The man may never show his face in public again !! *8=).

Question is, are we all going to do this again for some other
good concert in the future ??

Any thoughts on the Paul Brady scheduled for later in the year ??
