285.0. "Australian Football" by MEO78B::FARRELL () Mon Oct 19 1987 23:55

As the series between Ireland and Australia is starting , I would
be happy to enter some details on the rules (or lack of same) in
Australian Rules Football. I know that when the boys were out here
last , I was fortunate to be beside some really good blokes and
between us we managed to figure out what was going on. I explain
the rules of Gaelic and he explains Aus. rules. If the rules have
been explained then I need not bother. If interested, the first
reply will ensure that the rules get entered. I see we beat them
in the first game at Croke Park.

Rules, as they may be percieved by either side or spectator are much
appreciated ( I always thought there were no rules!)

Ok, got the rule book meself - so much for mates.

1.0 Playing ground, oval and behind posts.

1.1 Playing ground oval between 135-185 metres in length, 110-155
metres in width and measured from the centre of the ground.
Ideal playing area is 165 metres in length and 135 metres in
width. Two goal posts 6.4 metres apart and two behind posts
6.4 metres from each goal posts. The line between the goal posts
is called the goal line and the lines between the behind posts and
the goal posts is called the behind lines. Two lines at right angles
to the goal posts for a distance of 9 metres is connected by a straight
line and is known as the kick off lines. This area is called the
    goal square.

    Ball is oval in shape.

The team consists of 20 named players not more than 18 of whom take
part in the match at any time. The other 2 are called the interchange
    players.
At any time during the course of the match one of the players not
taking part may be interchanged with one of the participating players.
The official runner of a team must wear a uniform determined by
    the controlling body.
BTW you seem to be able to interchange as often as you like. If
a player does something stupid, you see him being substituted for
a while and then coming back on later.

A strange rule - a player may not wear surgical applicances or guards
    (no poofters !)

    6.0 Goals and behinds

A score cannot be registered unless an "all clear" or "touched, all
    clear" call is made.
Subject to the all clear signal, a goal is scored when the ball
is kicked over the goal line by a player without touching a player
or the goal post and a behind is scored in all other cases
when the ball passes over the goal line
or touches or passes over a goal post or passes over
a behind line without touching a behind post (and hence it is the
only game where you score when you miss !!)
If a defending player kicks or takes the ball over the goal or the
behind line a behind is scored. If the ball touches or passes over
a behind post it is out of bounds.
While the ball is on the ground and a player has his hand on it,
and if another player kicks the ball, it shall be deemed to have
been touched in transit. If the ball goes over the goal or behind
lines, the field umpire calls "touched, all clear" and a behind
    is scored.
A goal is worth 6 points and a behind is worth 1 point.

I'll take a look at the rest of the rules and see what is worth
putting in. I'll definitely include tackling.

    More tomorrow

    - Joe
