This is a very brief continuation from note 129. I am sorry but up until
now I did not have time. Read notes 128 and 129 for previous history.

IRISH HISTORY FROM WWII TO 1969
		===============================

Well it is a long time since I said I would write about this period
	of Irish History.

Ireland maintained it's neutrality during WWII despite preasure
from Churchill and the Americans to get or force Ireland into this
war. Ireland managed to avoid the war even though the North Strand
in Dublin was bombed by German planes in error. De Valera proved
to be a great politician as well as a fighting man.

In the early 50's Noel Browne introduced and attempted to introduce
many changes in the Irish medical system. He was considered a bit
of a revolutionary at the time. He introduced the "Mother and Child"
bill and many others, I am sorry I cannot remember them all.

The 50's and 60's saw Ireland emerge from its shell. Ireland had
always been Britain's bread basket, and agriculture was the main
stay of the economy. Ireland had no indiginous industries of its
own. Fianna Fail under the leadership of Sean Lemass led Ireland
into a new era. Industry became a priority for Ireland as a young
nation, initially based around the produce of the land. Lemass had
seen that we produced the products but did not process them ourselves.

The book Ireland Since the Famine by professor F.S. Lyons goes into
some detail on this period. I skip it as I cannot remember most
of the details of the period.

Towards the end of the 60's Ireland had a good growth rate and had
managed to stem the tide of emigration. It was rather a prosperous
period for Ireland and it was in this period that D.E.C. set up
their operation in Ireland. Industry and especially high tech industry
was at last extablished in Ireland.

The next chapter will be Ireland from 1969 to the present day.

What was going on in the occupied Six Counties during this period?

Aren't they part of Ireland too?

The statement the "DeVelera proved to be a great politician as well
as a fighter" is about as correct as your claim that Digital was
part of Irish history from World War 2 to 1969.

Digital started in Galway in July 1971.

    Willie,

I was given the date as 1969. I stand corrected. I did say that
I was open to correction. I don't have the same access to the full
    details as you do.

As for my statement that "DeValera proved to be a great politician
as well as a fighter", this is a quote from the book "Ireland since
the Famine" by professor F.S. Lyons and not my own personal conviction.
I will look up the book tonight to give you the page number.
