256.0. "CELTIC MUSIC WITH A DIFFERENCE" by BURREN::HORGAN () Fri Aug 28 1987 11:00
For a treat in classical Celtic music, I recommend:
1. James Galway - internationally-renowned flute player.
His "Songs of the Seashore" features Japanese folk music,
and is exquisite. He recently released a recording with
The Chieftans, which I am still waiting to get.
2. Alan Stivell - French harp music.
"Renaissance De La Harpe Celtique" and
"Celtic Symphony" (MOST unusual ... eerie)
3. Patrick Ball - Irish Harp music.
He has producted several recordings. One that I enjoy
features the music of O'Carolan - a blind itinerant harp
player and composer.
4. Phil Coulter - Irish Pops Orchestra - I may be prejudiced,
but I believe he can be compared to Arthur Fiedler. His
concert tours are sold out ... I missed him this spring in
Boston.
5. THE Chieftans - what can I say ? Superb is an understatement!
6. SIAMSA ... traditional folk music with heavy emphasis on the
Irish culture and language, in music and song.
