255.0. "CELTIC HISTORY - A GOOD REFERENCE BOOK" by GVAADG::MCWILLIAMS () Fri Aug 28 1987 08:39
My name is Peter McWilliams and I am from County Wicklow. I have been
working as a contract Technical Author/Editor at Digital EHQ, Geneva
and I have read the CELTS information with great interest.
I was particularly pleased to see so much interest in the Irish language
and culture. I left school 22 years ago and immediately emigrated and I
have been travelling around Europe ever since. When I was at school, I
learned Irish and I won the Fainne Airgead (Silver Ring). Unfortunately,
I have forgotten quite a lot of my Irish because I do not often meet
people who can speak it. However, when I do meet someone who can speak
it, I find that I remember quite a lot.
The main point of this note is not to tell everyone my life story but to
suggest a book that everyone interested in the history of the Celts should
read. The book is entitled "The Celts". It is written by Nora Chadwick who
was (she died in 1972) one of the most knowledgeable of people on all aspects
of Celtic history. The book is published by Penguin Books and the ISBN is
0 14 02.1211 6. I should point out that she deals with the origins of the
Celtic people from approximately 800 B.C. to the present day. All the
Celtic races are dealt with. I recommend this book very highly. It should
be remembered that there were at least three different races of people
in Ireland before the Celts arrived but the Celts are the ones who had and
indeed still have, the most influence. It might interest some of you to
look into Parsi (language of Persia or Iran) and Irish because both are
the oldest surviving purest versions of the ancient original Indo-European
languages.
My contract finishes today 28 August and so I will not have access to
this medium of communication.
