225.0. "London-Irish " by DUB01::OSULLIVAN_D (We're not stopping before Park Gate Street) Fri Jun 26 1987 13:08
The following quote is taken from an article in the June 16th issue
of the Irish Times. It discusses the setting up of a group who
hope to increase contacts between the inner cities of Dublin, Belfast
and London.
"
The minds of the London-Irish are concentrated on their own
experiences, indicating a new cultural self-expression. Recent
debates on historical revisionism in the Irish Post [Irish emmigrant
newspaper published in Britain] has a vigour and verve long since
lost in Ireland. Attempts by Dublin historians to redirect debate
along the approved new lines proved far less successful than they
have done here [Ireland]. The London-Irish know from experience
that the interests of the South Dublin bourgeoise are not the same
as their own.
Once again this year the MacSwiney lectures attracted overflow
audiences; and the ensuing discussions were hard-hitting, wide-ranging,
and free of sentimental shamrockery. "
The people orgainising this are called the London Strategic Policy
Unit, which were set up by good ol' Ken Livingstone's GLC. They
can be contacted at LSPU, 20 Vauxhall Bridge Road, London SWV 2SB.
