213.1 | I have a few of these | RGB::SEILER | Larry Seiler | Mon Jun 15 1987 15:48 | 31 |
| We have a lot of Celtic records. Here's our (my wife's and my) opinions
on the ones we know about. Our taste tends toward ballads and folk harp.
Patrick Ball - Celtic harp
*Very* inpressive! On the record we have, he plays O'Carolan
tunes (in his own arrangements, of course) on a metal strung harp,
and the sound is rich and delightful.
Alan Stivell - Celtic harp
He's good, but not nearly so good as Patrick Ball. We don't plan
on buying more of his records.
Jean Redpath - Vocals (?)
I don't have records of her, but I've heard her a lot on Prarie
Home Companion. She sings unaccompanied ballads, many in her
native Scots dialect (Lallans?). Her voice is superb, with a
range and expressiveness that makes instrumental accompaniment
totally unnecessary.
June Tabor - Vocals
I have a record called Silly Sisters, sung by her and another woman
(whose name I forget). Their voices blend wonderfully well, and
they sing with various instruments or a capella. Any record by
her should be worth trying.
Some day, when I get around to it, I'll type in some of the other Celtic
groups we have and our opinions.

213.2 | Some Suggestions | SSVAX::OCONNELL | Irish by Name | Mon Aug 31 1987 14:24 | 30 |
| Alan Stivell is an excellent Breton Harper and song writer. He
is (or was) heavily involved in the Celtic movement in Brittany.
We have his "Renaissance" album and still love it...it's got to
be 10 years old!
Seamus Eagan is a 17 year old wonder. He plays virtuosically (?)
nearly every instrument he puts his hands on. His primary instrument
is the flute-tin-whistle-uileann pipe family. But he plays the
fretted string instruments with the same amount of talent. He comes
from Philadelphia and other members of his family join him in concerts
and festivals as The Eagan Family. He often performs with Moloney,
O'Connell and Keane as well as another talented artist...Eileen
Ivers.
Eileen Ivers has just recorded an album with an accordian player
whose name escapes me at the moment (temporary brain damage). It's
called "Fresh Takes" and it's on Green Linnet. It is a wonderful
album, reminiscent of the album Jolyon Jackson did with Paddy Glackin.
A little traditional stuff mixed in with some tasteful experimental
stuff. Well worth the money.
I think Shanachie (but I'm not sure) has put out an album called
"Cherish the Ladies" with the best of the female Irish musicians
available. Liz Carroll is one it and, although I haven't got a
copy, I've heard it's a really nice piece of work. Produced by
Mick Moloney, I think (who else???)
That's all for now...

213.3 | please pardon if redundant | CIVIC::JOHNSTON | rebel without applause | Mon Aug 31 1987 16:12 | 7 |
| I have written off for a catalogue of Shanachie on CD. [no, I don't
have 'the disease'; but cannot afford the new turntable at present]
I hadn't expected to find such until I was given one as a gift!
OK, so I'm a bit excited -- upon arrival would anyone care for a
copy?

213.4 | Gig for local piper? | TOPDOC::AHERN | Dennis (formerly SWSNOD::RPGDOC) | Mon Sep 28 1987 15:59 | 5 |
| Somebody at Church last sunday was asking if anybody knew a piper
(highland) to play for a wedding. This would be in Bedford, Mass.
but I don't know the date yet. If anybody has the name of one, please
let me know. Thanks.

| Phil and John Cunningham, Andy Stewart, et al, are also known as
Silly Wizzard, and they are superb.

Does anyone know what happened to Triona and Micheal O'Domhnaill (sp?),
brother and sister who used to be in the Bothy Band, and after that in
Relativity with Phil and John Cunningham? I heard that they've "gone
new age"...

213.7 | Intresting, whereever they go..... | FSOA::KSULLIVAN | | Wed Nov 21 1990 11:29 | 9 |
| They are currently part of the group Nightnoise. They have four (?)
albums out, their last one being absoutely beautiful ("By the end of
the Evening"?? I think?). They record for Windham Hill but are not what
I'd consider New Age, more original Irish compositions. Triona still does
some singing also. They have a new record just released that I haven't
yet seen anywhere and they are also touring at present. They play in
Beverly Ma. on this Sunday, Nov. 25th. Always worth the effort, but I
think these tickets are expensive $22-24???
