Waltham Cross is the site of one of the Eleanor Crosses, built by Henry/Edward the Thingy on his journey back to London with the coffin of his dead Queen Eleanor. A cross was built at every place the coffin rested overnight. Others were Charing Cross, and St. Albans had one, there was one in the City somewhere. They've all been pulled down now, I think. The one at Charing Cross is a 19th century copy, the one in Waltham Cross is a copy too, I think. Phillip | |||||
