174.0. "8th Celtic Film Festival" by AYOV15::ASCOTT (Alan Scott, FMIC, Ayr, Scotland) Mon Apr 06 1987 11:36
8th Celtic Film Festival is on this week in Inverness, Scotland.
A preview program on STV, Sunday 5 April, described a fairly wide range
of films. Particularly, two Welsh-language films were mentioned.
"Coming Up Roses" shows the effect on the staff of a small
cinema in a remote village, when it closes. Review clips look
really entertaining, in a slightly-sentimental account of the
growing relationship between the usherette/cleaning lady and the
projectionist.
Another film (not sure of the title) describes the experiences of a
Welsh-speaking recruit to a Welsh regiment in the army, including
service in northern Ireland and military imprisonment.
One Scottish film (in English), "Tree of Liberty", is a documentary
on the work of a crippled American, Serge Hovey, with Jean
Redpath (a well-known Scottish folk-singer) and others on the
songs of Robert Burns. It's very moving and a bit horrific -
Serge Hovey is confined to bed, unable to communicate except with
the aid of a computer, and has apparently been like this for
17 years... He's now the longest surviving patient with the
obscure illness he has, (most only last 3 or 4 years), and relies
on his wife, family, and apparently considerable fortune (from his
father's work in the movie industry in Hollywood), to carry on an
obsessive collection and arrangement of Burns' lyrics.
