172.0. "Irish Wolfhounds-a Noble Breed!" by DPDMAI::OREILLY () Fri Apr 03 1987 16:00

I'm starting this topic on Irish Wolfhounds. If you read Note 171,
    you know why.

Anyone out there own an Irish Wolfhound? If so then you know that
they are an incredible breed. They are very loyal, friendly and
gentle. They are the world's largest. They were given as gifts
to midieval(sp?) kings to protect their castles. They are the face
on the American Kennel Association logo.

But here's the critical question for those of you residing in Ireland:
Do you have some friends who would loan an Irish Wolfhound to my
wife and I when we come to Ireland on trips? We're afraid we may
go into some sort of "Irish Wolfhound Shock" if we didn't have an
Irish Wolfhound by our sides while in Ireland. If that's too much
to ask for, perhaps you know someone who will be willing to let
us stop every couple days to visit their Wolfhound? Or perhaps
you know of a breeder of the Noble Breed?

I owned an Irish Terrier for about 12 years. We got him after
a trip to Ireland back in the 60's. Although she was a little
high-strung (like all terriers) she loved people and loved to
play. We named him "Fondee" which although probably spelled
wrong, meant a hug or a kiss in Ireland.

There's a fellow in Acton Massachusetts who raises them. He
lives off of route 2A. I think we paid about $150 for her way back
    when.

Does the Irish Terrier have any real connection to Ireland ? (like the
    Irish wolfhound)

No, George, I have never heard of an Irish Terrier, but that doesn't
    mean they're not a breed.

Add to the original note: Irish Wolfhounds supposedly drove the
Irish Elk (or elkhound?) to extinction.

I'm not sure if it is possible to loan dogs for a period - maybe
if you put an advert in the Irish papers before you come over?
There is a "dogs&cats home" here in Dublin but I doubt if they'll
    have too many wolfhounds there.

You could also consider buying one, advertisments for wolfhound
pups appear regularly in the papers.
