171.0. "A Wonderful Irish Love Story" by DPDMAI::OREILLY () Fri Apr 03 1987 10:27

This is a story of how my wife and I met. My name is John Joseph
Patrick O'Reilly. On St. Patrick's Day, 1985, I rode my bicycle
from my home, 12 miles to downtown Dallas to watch the parade.
Of course, I first stopped at Callaghan's Irish Pub to have a pint
of Guinness. After a healthy stout, I rode over to the parade which
had not yet begun. The first group that I noticed was a beautiful
    "pack" of Irish Wolfhounds!

I have always loved big dogs and so I went over to pet the Wolfhounds.
The one I ended up petting was Kathleen and her owner, a beautiful
Irish lass came over to see who was talking to Katie. Michelle
Johnson does not sound Irish, but her mother's maiden name is Fallon!
It ends up she's about 80% Irish and both her brothers have graduated
from Irish Catholic Universities (Holy Name and Notre Dame). Soon,
Michelle had to depart to get in formation in the parade. She had
been looking for her current, unreliable boyfriend but instead kept
seeing my face appear in the crowd. Yes, I was following her and
Katie as they walked through the parade! I met them at the end
of the parade and we made a date for the following weekend and we've
    never been apart since.

By the way, my mother's birthday is on St. Patrick's Day!

When Michelle's parents heard she had met J. J. Patrick O'Reilly
at the St. Patrick's Day parade and that the Irish Wolfhound had
taken a liking to me (they consider Katie an infallible judge of
character), they loved me before even meeting me!

So, we've been married now for six months and are very happy. The
Irish Wolfhound's name is now Kathleen O'Reilly--isn't that a beautiful
name for a beautiful Irish Wolfhound!

Best and Most Kind Regards from Dallas, John O'Reilly
    been apart since.

John, do you know anything about where your branch of the O'Reilly
    family comes from?

(My great-grandfather was John (Joseph) O'Reilly and his family
was from Donegal -- more in my intro --)
171.2Not sure where the O'Reillys originateDPDMAI::OREILLYFri Apr 03 1987 14:378
I used to know the county; my father researched very thoroughly.
I'll have to ask one of my sisters or brothers to find that information
and I'll let you know. Seems as though it was about in the center
of the country. I ran into a women this St Pat's Day from Fort Worth,
TX whose maiden name was O'Reilly. She asked me the same question
but then quickly said, "all O'Reillys come from xxxxx county".
Wish I could tell you more. But I don't see any harm in just assuming
we're kin. Take Care Brother. John

um, it's sister, not brother, but I'll forgive you this time :-)
    (Or maybe even cousin?)

Some of us introduced ourselves in the first note. Mine is at 1.29.

My O'Reilly relatives came from Bandurin Village in Donegal. They
came to the states in the 1870's and 1880's. I don't know anything
about the family once they get back a generation in Ireland. (I
do have genealogical charts summarizing everything I know about
the family.) The other Irish names are McSherry and Kiernan on that
    side of the family.

Most of the descendants of the family with the O'Reilly surname
have settled in the Concord, NH and Exeter, NH area.

Yes, without doubt IW's are infallible judges of character!

We should know - we've been owned by 3 of them so far... :-)

171.7Pray for KathleenDPDMAI::OREILLYOh Really?.........No, O'Reilly!Sun Mar 27 1988 21:4921

I want everyone to know, who has read this note, that our beloved
matchmaker, Imperial Lady Kathleen O'Reilly, is a little sick.

She's been diagnosed with bone cancer. My wife Michelle will be
driving her for surgery to Colorado State Univ. which has a special program
for this called "limb salvaging". Katie's tumor started in her
    right front leg.

Please say a prayer for this pup as she has been an unselfish, loyal
    and caring animal.

If the surgery is successful and God is willing, Katie will be with
    us in one year.

171.8Successful Surgery!!!!!!!DPDMAI::OREILLYOh Really?.........No, O'Reilly!Wed Apr 06 1988 00:1026

Katie apparently has had a very successful surgery yesterday afternoon!
The vets were quite pleased with themselves as they evidently
performed an exceptionally masterful job with Katie! (your prayers
must have been on the right network)

They actually replaced part of her leg with a bone from a Great
Dane (she's no longer pure Wolfhound?!). She will no longer have
a "wrist" and so will walk with a limp until she gets used to her
    "peg-leg".

A Colorado snowstorm stranded my wife, her grandma (1st generation
Irish born in USA in Chicago) and Katie for 2.5 days delaying surgery three
days. Then the car broke down. But they finally made it.

They should be back by Friday! Get out the poitchin (sp?)!!

She's been getting special treatment as always. The vets couldn't
stand to put her in the kennel with the other *dogs*. So they set
up a special bed in their own break/office area!!

This house is mighty empty.....but not for long!!

That last reply seems likes ages ago.

Katie came back and was troubled by a fever for the first wekk and
a half along with digestive problems.

But the fever finally broke and she's made great strides in her
recovery. Everyday she does another thing like her old self.

Now, the concern is that the cancer was confined to her leg. She'll
get a chest X-ray every 3 months - as if there is cancer that's
where it will appear next. She gets her first chest X-ray this
    Thursday.

It is with great regret that I inform you that Katie O'Reilly, the
Noble Irish Wolfhound has passed away. This gentle beast brought
my wonderful wife and I together. For that deed there cannot be enough
thanks to this Friend. I thank God for bringing her into this world.

John, I'm so sorry to hear about Katie. I know she meant as much to
you as a child would have. I lost 4 cats in the same summer to feline
leukemia virus, and I went through hell losing one dear friend after
    another.

You and your wife have certainly done a lot in terms of letting
    people know about Irish wolfhounds.
