153.0. "Three Celtic Names" by WELSWS::MANNION () Thu Mar 12 1987 08:55

    There are twelve people in DEC called Mannion. There's me in the
    UK, one guy in the US (I think) and 10 others in Galway!

    My "family tradition" has it that the Mannions came over from Ireland
    to Lancashire a couple of generations ago. The name is rare anywhere
    in Britain, except the area around Warrington, where there's a whole
    page of them in the phone book! Well, one or two, anyway.

    I've been able to find out some things which are of a rather mythical
    nature, and I might put them here if there is any interest, but
    could anyone shed any light on the real origins of the name. Are
    the Mannions rare outside Galway, is there a more specific centre
    for them etc?

    My mother's maiden-name is Fearick, also Irish, and said to a
    corruption or derivation of MacPhiaraic. This name is even rarer
    than Mannion. They are from Tuam, which I think is, again , in Galway.
    Can any one shed any light on the Fearicks?

    The third Celtic name I can lay claim to is a good Cornish one -
    Nancarrow. Rarer still, I believe. Who knows anything about them?

    If anyone can get Swiss Italian TV, there is a programme there about
    the Mannions. At least that's what Rene says. But if anyone can
    give me any information I would be grateful.

    Phillip

153.1Sean Mannion?TALLIS::DARCYGeorge @Littleton Mass USAThu Mar 12 1987 10:295
    Well, ever hear of Sean Mannion, the fighter from Spiddel, Co. Galway?
    I think he's living now in Dorchester Mass., or at least at
    one time. Quite a fighter from what I hear.

    Are you related to him?
153.2Another strong SeanTALLIS::DARCYGeorge @Littleton Mass USAThu Mar 12 1987 10:3816
    Speaking of Seans, I have an interesting story about my
    great-grandmother's older brother, Sean Mor Molloy.

    He was from Oughterrard (Derrymoyle), Co. Galway along the shores
    of the Corrib. Rumor had it that he was the greatest oarsman in
    all of Ireland - and there wasn't an oar anywhere he couldn't break
    on the first try. He lived a bachelor with his two sisters until he
    died around 1950 or so. The other siblings emmigrated to the US.

    This story was strangely confirmed by three people back in 1967 -
    one a priest from Oughterrard, a lady we met in Salthill, and someone
    else I can't recall. Anyone else corrorobate this "scal" ?

    It's my only claim to fame lads :v)

153.3Who knows?WELSWS::MANNIONThu Mar 12 1987 10:486
    Perhaps I should try and wangle a trip to the Galway plant to see
    who I am related to over there.

    The Fighting Mannions of Spiddel, yeah, sounds good.

153.4Mannions On Swiss Italian TVFNYFS::AUNGIERRene El Irlandais que no tiene tiempo para los InglesFri Mar 13 1987 09:3716
    The program that the Swiss Italian station is running is about a
    Mannion in or around the turn of the lat 18th early 19th century

    It tells the story of their life in Ireland and how the oldest of
    the family imigrated to America after killing a English landlord
    an his building up of the Fenian movement in America, his return
    to Ireland with weapons for the Fenians, his capture, his rescue
    and now he is back in America.

    It was shown 3 or 4 years ago on R.T.E. or I.T.V. I am not sure.
    The star of the story is Pearse Brosnan who has made a name for
    homself in America.

    Regards

153.5Planxty MannionWELSWS::MANNIONThu Mar 19 1987 04:389
    Born to my brother and his half Chinese woman, at 3:00 a.m. on the
     morning of St. Patrick's Day - a boy!

    Guess what they're going to call him - Oliver!

    I'm thinking of asking all you Celts out there to write to them
    and beg them not to allow this travesty.

153.6The name Oliver makes me "Twist"FNYFS::AUNGIERRene El Irlandais que no tiene tiempo para los InglesThu Mar 19 1987 06:4210
    Talk about dolly mixtures, make them call him Patrick. The name
    Oliver makes me "Twist".

    I saw in a January edition of the "Irish Times" that a certain John
    Mannion from Galway had been selected for the Olympic squad for
    their match against Spain in soccer, you never know Philip, he could
    be going across the water in a year or 2.

    Mr. Mannion, it may be our families knew each other a few generations
    ago. In the Introductions note someone thought that the Stantons
    also come from Spiddle (we have no written records, only the stories,
    and now no one remembers the name of the town). Perhaps if you're
    in Merrimack we can drop into Kathleen ni Houlihans for a jar or
    two..

153.8Where am I?WELSWS::MANNIONMon Mar 30 1987 12:066
    Where's Merrymack? If it's where I think it is then there's little
    chance of my making it over there, I'm afraid. I keep forgetting
    to look up Spiddle in my atlas, so I may as well also ask Where's
    Spiddle?

    Phillip
153.9TALLIS::DARCYGeorge @Littleton Mass USAMon Mar 30 1987 13:0912
    Not sure about Merrymack, but Spiddle is about 12? miles west of
    Galway city along the coast road (cois farrige). It is also home
    of Martin Standann's clothing shop, which has more Aran sweaters
    than I've ever seen in one place. I counted about 1200 while waiting
    in the queue.

    Even up to about 10 years ago, you could hear Irish spoken everywhere
    in Spiddle, but now the children are speaking more English than
    Irish there, as evidenced by me watching a pick-up game of soccer
    (football) there.

    	Mary Mack is in "MKO" but Houlihans' is closer to "ZKO"

    	Spiddal is on R336 between Barna and Inveran.
