125.0. "THE PROCLAMATION OF 1916 AVAILABLE" by FNYFS::AUNGIER (Rene Aungier, Ferney-Voltaire, France) Wed Feb 04 1987 08:41

My father is a lecturer in Enginerring in Dublin and they have a
printing section. He recently sent me a copy of the Proclamation
of the 1916 Rising in English.

If anybody is interested in a copy of it F.O.C. I can send you one.
I have framed mine and it shows reading it how advanced the Irish
leaders of the 1916 rising were. Who says the English invented
    domocracy.

I think that the period of Irish history which is the most interesting
    is the period 1900 - 1950.

Ireland was the first colony of Britain to gain independence but
by beating the Brits. Gandi and many other leaders of the British
colony followed and read the stories of Irish Independence. Gandi
is supossed to have read a book about Michael Collins, one of the
greatest guerilla leaders in Irish history and a leading statesman.

The idea of hunger strikes goes back to Irish history when Terence
Mc Sweeney, the lord mayor of Cork city went on hunger strike to
the deatch as a means of protest and then many followed. Gandi and
others used it as a way of pushing the people into action.

In recent years there has been Bobby Sands, Francis Hughes, and
the others of whom unfortunately I cannot remember their names
who used it as a form of protest.
