124.0. "IRISH NEWS LETTER ANYBODY" by FNYFS::AUNGIER (Rene Aungier, Ferney-Voltaire, France) Wed Feb 04 1987 04:43

Some time back there was a Irish News letter published and I only
ever managed to get a look at 1 edition. I know it has been
discontinued but with so many Irish people around somebody out there
must have some time free to be able to start it up again.

I would like a bit of Irish news. It has been almost 3 years since
I have been back in Ireland and miss the home news.

Somebody give it a try out there. I will give a hand if I can in
    some sort of way.

Actually, there were two newsletters....one by Tod Reilley in Dublin,
and one by Willie O'Farrell ib Clonmel. Both were most welcome,
and highly interesting. (I used distribute them amongst non-deccies
in the Ottawa Gaels Gaelic Football Club, and it was in great demand)

I am sure that I speak for all the Ex-Pats when I say that anyone,
or group, that restarted this endevour would be hailed as a hero!

    Mike McCrohan

BTW, the Irish generally use the Mc prefix, and the Scots use the
Mac, but there are many exceptions.

124.2A Temporary Solution?GAOV08::FERRIELiam Ferrie - GalwayMon Feb 09 1987 14:487
I will volunteer to write such a newsletter for a few weeks. If I find
I have the time I will continue to do so. The first issue is now available.
Send a mail message to GAOV08::FERRIE to order your copy and have your name
put on the distribution list. I will only send copies to the accounts that
send mail to me.

Well done Liam. I wish to say thanks for the first issue and I hope
that all will go well. If I can help in any way I will be very glad
to do so, say for example in time a letters column.

    Thanks again

Liam, could it be possible to post the newsletters in CELT.NOTE
as it was done with the old newsletter? I'm sure it will insure
much more readers than a distribution list could bring.
    			Denis.
124.8GAOV08::FERRIELiam Ferrie - GalwayMon Feb 23 1987 06:058
Denis, I do not feel comfortable having the newsletter published here.
Anyone who wishes to receive a copy just has to send Mail to me.

Maybe some day it could be put on a VTX system but that is a discussion
for the future.

    Hi everybody,

lease hel Liam as we would all like to. I really want this newsletter
to last, so please read my note entered in error as a separate note,
    136. I agree with Liam and come on lads and lassies, give Liam all
the support you can, spead the word about this newsletter as I have
done and get people to send mail. The 1st issue I distriuted myself
and then realised that I was not doing the newsletter any good.

I want anybody and everybody who is Irish or otherwise to read it
so get out ther and lets give Liam all the help we can.

He has done a big thing for us abroad so let hear it for Liam.

Gura Mille maith agat Liam agus ba maith liom a ra le haigh gach
einne anseo, Tamuid an sasta leis.

    Slan a cairde.

124.11Issue No.5GAOV08::FERRIELiam Ferrie - GalwayTue Mar 10 1987 04:589
I have just sent out issue number 5 of the newsletter to 45
subscribers.

It came to my attention that at least two people who had requested
to be added to the distribution list failed to get on it. If this
has happened to anyone else be sure and let me know.

Lets get the readership of "The Irish Emigrant" up so that some
day it can be more important than the Vogon news, spead the word
around and lets get the Australians reading it. Everybody should
do there best to promote it. On the boys.

Liam, any more statistics. I think a lot more people are reading
the newsletter but some people are distributing it instead of asking
the people to send mail to Liam, this I feel is very important so
lets all get this readership up to let say, make 200 a goal for
    the end of May.

Liam, it might interest you to know that a few non-DEC friends have
shown interest in your newsletter and look for copies whenever they
visit our house. We try to keep hard copies here for that very
purpose. Among the new readers of your news letter are:

    My father-in-law, Sean O'Connell
The far famed Irish Folk Program host (WGBH), Brian O'Donovan
    The incredible fiddler, Seamus Connolly
     and a few others.

Keep up the good (and entertaining, informative, enlightening)work.

124.18For those that are interestedGAOV08::FERRIELiam Ferrie - GalwayWed Jul 08 1987 08:4137
Growth in the distribution of the Irish Emigrant newsletter has slowed
down a bit and now stands at 132. It is now sent to the following
States/Countries:

	Australia (Perth)	2
	Canada (Kanata) 3
	France
	  Valbonne 11
	  Ferney-V. 7
	  Paris 1 19
	Germany
	  Munich 3
          Kaufbeuren 5 8
	Holland
	  Nijmegen 6
	  Urtecht 2 8
	Hong Kong 1
	Puerto Rico 1
	Saudi Arabia 1
	Switzerland (Geneva)	6

	  Massachusetts	48
	  New Hampshire 7
	  S.Carolina 1
	  Texas 2
	  Washington 1 60

Readership I assume is much higher as a number of readers have told me that
they print off copies for friends and at least one person is sending it
out on USENET.

Ladies and Gentlemen of Celt note,

I would like to see as many of us would the Newsletter reaching
the 1000 mark by the end of the year and I strongly believe that
this magic number can be reached by year end if we all make an effort.

    How do we do this?

We do not forward it to other people but we let Liam mail it directly
to people if possible. Remember that Liam is sacrificing a fair
bit of his free time to give us this newsletter and it is nice to
see the rewards of your work.

    Why do this?

So that the 1000 can be reached and that this newsletter be an example
of electronic publishing which has a world wide readership.

    1000 readers by year end

We can all play a part in it
