116.0. "Where can I order a kilt ?" by PUNDIT::MCWILLIAMS () Mon Jan 05 1987 20:03

Does anybody know of a place where I can get a ladies kilt/skirt in a
Gunne Tartan ? The item I am looking for is not a real kilt in that it
would not feature the heavy pleating (2") found on men's kilts, but
more of a social kilt (1" pleats).

I looked at the Scottish Lion in North Conway, and they would order
one from some Mill in Scotland for $199 with a 14 week lead time.
The last time I was in London, I saw in the Scotch House (definitely
not a discount establishment) that they would custom order such
an item for about #100 in about 6-8 weeks.

The reason that we are looking for the kilt is a symbolic gesture
at our wedding, with the bride changing into my family's tartan
    for leaving the reception.

I am looking for a turnaround time of about 6 weeks, and better
price than I can get from a small local specialty store, I am willing
    to call just about anywhere.

    Jim,
I've spoken to one of the girls in the office and they assure
me that someone can probably get one in Ayr without much problem
for about 15-35 pounds depending upon whats wanted, I'll find out
the names of some of the shops and mail you, we always have people
coming over to the east coast from Ayr and perhaps get something
    arranged if you like.

    Jim,
i leave for Scotland on Friday and return Feb 2nd - so let me
know. I incidentally have my own Gunn kilt (which is not worn
    much in this country).

If you want to try some more here go to the Scotch Pines store
in Pepperell - they have some skirts in stock.

If you ever need a piper I have also some contacts locally.

    Bill.

Are you in the US? I have really good luck with
    Highland Heritage, Ltd.
    131 E Main St.
    Newark, Delaware 19711 phone 302-368-4031 pr 301-398-6861

They have very quality goods, are in the ballpark on price, and
if the fabric is in stock, 2 weeks, if special order 6 weeks
for delivery. Give them a call.

They do their own tailoring from bolts of fabric, so you don't have
a finished goods duty to worry about.

    Randy,

Check with Murphy (of this file) I'm not sure if he was wearing
a Kilt or one of his wife's Skirts. Whatever it sure was Pretty...

                           8*)

    I couldn't resist....

Seriously you may be able to find one at the Irish Jaunting Cart in Lawrence
Ma. If they don't have one Dave Burke should be able to point you
    in the right direction.

Thanks, paddy! I chatted with a fellow Scot last night on the way home
from work (thru ham radio), and have some more leads, too.

'Gotta get ready to represent the Clan at the games this year!
