93.0. "Ta me thar saile" by FNY09::AUNGIER (Rene El Gringo sin casa, Irish Rebel) Fri Oct 24 1986 05:53
Ta me fada o mo tir
My name is Rene Aungier and I haven't had time up to know to add a few words.
I am despite the name almost 100% Irish. I speak Irish pretty fluently and
at any oppurtunity I will speak in Irish rather than English.
On my fathers side we have some famous republican blood. Sean Treacy from
county Tipperary who along with Dan Breen started the War Of Independence
at Solaheadbeg in county Tipperary in the 20's. You shouls read a book by
Dan Breen called "My Fight For Irish Freedom" about the War Of Independence.
I am of republican leanings. I enjoy any books on the War Of Independence.
I enjoy any history but the history, culture, folklore of Ireland make me
very proud to be Irish.
I like Irish poetry, here is a beautiful simple poem but with a lot of meaning.
Bhi subh milis ar bhascrann an dorais
ach mhuch me an corrai ionam a d'eirigh
mar smaoinigh ar an la a bheas an bascrann glan
agus an laimh beag ar iarriagh.
I am very found of the history of the Easter Rising as it was the start
of freedom. I especially like the poetry and writings of many of the leaders
of the 1916 rising, Padraig Pearce, Joseph Mary Plunkett etc.
Joseph Mary Plunkett : The Presence of God
Padraig Pearce : The Mother
: The Wayfarer
I have lived in Spain before I moved to France and when time permits I have
a few little stories about the Irish in Spain and the role they played in
its history.

| Rene,
Ta' fa'ilte romhat anseo! If you get time, I'd be interested
in some stories of Irish (republican not fascist!) involvement in
the Spanish civil war.
There is mention in another note of Christy Moore's record 'Ride
On`. This LP has a song which recalls some of the participants
who fought alongside the republicans in 1936. It's an excellent
record all round BTW.
Viva la Quinta Brigada.

93.2 | THE IRISH IN SPAIN | FNY09::AUNGIER | Rene El Gringo sin casa, Irish Rebel | Thu Oct 30 1986 19:14 | 40 |
| I know the song well nd before my tape recorder chewed up some
of my Irish tapes I used to play that song a lot. I like the
song. Well as you probably know the Irish fought on both sides
during the Spanish civil war.
I have an Irish friend who lives out in a place call Escorial
on the road north west of Madrid where the "Battle for Madrid"
was fought. You can still see the remains of the trenches and
he has found unexploded bombs behind his house. Escorial is in
a mountaineous area and it is also the place where the "Valle
de los Caidos" is (Valley of the fallen) because so many died
there.
Frank Ryan I have been told fought there. Frank Ryan was one
of the most prized prisoners of Franco. He was among the few
not to be executed by Franco because of intervention of the German
embassador to Madrid. Many of the Irish who fought are revered
in many ways. I was in a small village in the province of Segovia
and this old man started to talk to me. He kept mentioning a
Irish mans name whom I had never heard of. It turned out to be
a man who is very famous writer in Spain and who is among the
very few foreigners to be granted citizenship in honour of his
work. I sorry I cannot remember his name but it is very Irish.
I am a bit diorintated at the moment as it is 1.30 in the morning
and I am writing this while I am testing an applicatiobn
inmstallation kit. I will give you more definitive information
next week.
I have travelled a lot in rural Spain and I have many stories
of the Irish from the locals. Next week hopefully if this kit
is O.K.
Giorionn beirt bothair.
