64.0. "Music in Reading..." by DOOZER::COOK (Zen and the art of Flute playing) Tue Aug 12 1986 12:34

Is there any Celtic music in the Reading (UK) area? I know of the
Kennet Arms (owned by a Galwayman?) but I'm not sure which nights
are good nights for live music or if there's anywhere else in the
area for such entertainment. Anyone know? Does anyone in the Reading
area play/sing Celtic music? Does anyone still read this file??

Have you tried checking the LIVE_MUSIC_UK notes conference?
(KP7 to add it). It has schedules of who is playing where and
I've seen Irish and other traditional music mentioned.

Sorry to hear you're in Reading because I'm in Massachusetts and
have not gotten any much response to my note in this file on Celtic
    Jamm Sessions.

If you are in Reading, UK, surely you must know about the notesfile
on all forms of folk music, etc. under JOLLY::LIVE_MUSIC_UK. This
seems to be mostly a regularly published schedule of upcoming concerts
and such in the UK, but there has been some back-and-forth noting
    on a few subjects.

Too bad I didn't make your acquaintance before going to England
in June. My wife and I flew over on June 10th as prizewinners in
a big contest put on by British Airways. As part of the reception
at Heathrow they had a Morris team from Reading University and I
immediately whipped my D pennywhistle out of my pocket and played
through a couple of dances with them.

Later we tried to catch up to them as they danced out someplace
south of Reading. I think it was Eversley or something like that.
We had a car problem on the M4 (or was it M5?) that needed AA to
replace a coil, and by the time we caught up to them at The Toad
in Stump pub they had pretty much finished dancing.

Because it was Ascot week we were unable to find a B&B so late at
night and all of the dancers were students who lived in dorms etc.
With no place to crash and feeling pretty wiped out having come
down from Wilcomb north of Stratford, we ended up driving down one
of the several cul-de-sacs we had explored while looking for the
pub and slept in the car at a fording place in the river, just across
    from some old inn/restaurant.

I put a note in the Live_Music_UK file seeking the address of somebody
on the team intending to write and tell them of our further adventures,
but have so far gotten no more than the address of some office at
    the university.

Thanks. Yes, I read the 'Gig Guide' but that tends to mention only
specific 'event' evenings. I wondered if anyone knew if there were
informal 'jam' sessions on any particular night.

Sorry to have missed you, too. If anyone is visiting, please get
in touch and I'm sure we can get together. I'm not a very proficient
musician by any means but I do enjoy live music at the family level
and, after spending 2 years in Galway, am rather fond of Irish
tunes (especially a la Matt Molloy, since I play flute) and, of
course, a pint of the 'black shtuff'.
