26.0. "Celtic calendar" by VLNVAX::MDLYONS (Michael D. Lyons DTN 297-5911) Thu Apr 03 1986 13:46

I have a calendar which was published by the Celtic League
which has interesting short notes for most of the days of the
year. If anyone is interested, I'll post them a day or so ahead
of time. The notes tell of interesting historical or literary events
which happened on that date in the past.

    	April 1

1401 Conway Castle taken by Welsh rebels under William
    			and Rhys ap Tudor.

1980 Establishment of Manx Customs Service thus
freeing Mann from English Customs control.

    	April 2

1914 Cumann na mBan, Irish women's republican movement,
    			founded.

    	April 4

1774 Oliver Goldsmith, Irish author of "Deserted
			Village", died.

Re: .4 I'm sorry but I don't have much more information about the
calendar. I received it as a gift myself, and I'm not a member
of the Celtic League. I assume that if you add a "USA" to the address
I gave in reply 2, it will get to the right people. I don't see
any reason they wouldn't mail it to France, providing they were
    given the appropriate postage (?).

There is some additional information about the Celtic League
on the calendar. It appears to be an international organization,
    with an American Branch.

From the back of the calender:

"The principal aim of the Celtic League, which was founded in
Wales in 1961, is to bring the Celtic peoples together, and to better
inform the world about the Celts; who they are and what they have
done. We, in the Celtic League American Branch, hope that this
Celtic Calendar, which begins on the Celtic New Year, will do just
    that."

    	Celtic League American Branch
    	P.O. Box 20153
    	Dag Hammarskjold Postal Center
    	New York, New York 10017

    	Memberships are $15 individual, $20 for a couple, $25 for a
family, $35 for a contributing membership.

P.S. Note that this address is different from that for obtaining the
    calendar.

26.103Mercoeur's death, a celtic event?TSC01::MAILLARDDenis MAILLARDFri Feb 19 1988 01:537
Re .102: I've to take exception to this one being in a Celtic calendar.
The duke of Mercoeur was a French lord with ancestry from Lorraine
who happened to be governor of Brittany in a time of civil (and
religious) war. He never had any interest in anything Celtic, but
simply wanted an independent kingdom for himself, no matter in what
country it was or who were his subjects. Anyway, he failed.

26.215August 4th, 1789, and Breton autonomy.TSC01::MAILLARDDenis MAILLARDThu Aug 04 1988 05:1516
Re .214: Here again, I must contest the first item: On August 4th
in 1789, the French "Assemble Constituante" voted to abolish the
privileges of the Nobility and Clergy. It is quite possible that someone
in Brittany (among those who lost their privileges) saw that as
a loss of some parts of Breton autonomy (I'd like to know what autonomy
Brittany had left at that time, the French monarchy never really
paid any respect to the treaty it had signed in 1535. -Did I hear someone
say Limerick?- ), but most of the Bretons as well as most of the people
in the other parts of France, were overjoyed at the news that from
now on, nobles and priests would be juridically and otherwise considered
on the same foot as the "Tiers Etat" (ie, the rest of the population).
I sure would like to know where Brittany was mentionned in the acts
which were voted in the night of August 4th. Incidentally, this date
is considered by many as one of the most important in the history
of France and of the French revolution.

Hey, you know more about it than I do... That one was straight
from the 1988 Celtic Calendar. I don't happen to agree with some
of what they've put in there either. They have a tendency to
"interpret" history to fit in with their agenda. My own knowledge
of French and Breton history is very limited.

I've been resisting an inclination to edit out some of their "Irish
political prisoner" and "Irish patriot" labels.

I'm glad you pointed this out... Please continue to make
corrections, etc... ...filling in the details is great too
and makes the events more interesting ... I, for one, have greatly
enjoyed some of the historical notes which have been entered in

and never had a chance to succeed, but the French prime minister

    only the third in 59.
When the first Dail Eireann met in early 19 they elected a president
of the Dail (i.e. prime minister), not a president of Ireland. What's
more, as De Valera was still in jail then, it was Cathal Brugha

    Re .274

    Denis is correct as usual.

The Irish republic was declared on Easter Monday 1916 from the steps
of the G.P.O. by Padraigh Pearse.

The 1st Dil (parliament of the Irish people), sat in January of
1919 and was composed of those Sinn Fin members elected in the
British general election of late 1918. (Ireland was part of the
    U.K. until 1922).

Eamonn de Valera was elected as the president of the Dil.

In 1922 the Irish Free State was set up which gave independence
from Britain to a large portion of Ireland but this new state was
still part of commonwealth and the titular head of state was the
British monarch. There was no British ambassador to Ireland but
    a high commissioner.
The monarch was removed from his position as head of the Irish state
by the Dil in 1936 on his abdication from the throne. John A Costello
the leader of the opposition was very vocal against that.

11 years later in 1947 the same John A. Costello while on a visit
to Canada announced that the Irish constitution which was in existence
since 1937 would be implemented and thus declared the Irish Free
State to be a republic. This move paved the way for the election
of the 1st president of Ireland. In fact the person was not elected
but selected by the Dil as an agreed canditate (something that
the Dil can do as the title is a figurehead role).
Here is the list of presidents in their order, I'm not totally correct
    on the dates I'd say.

        1. Douglas Hyde 1947 - 1952 (died in office)
        2. Sean T. O'Kelly 1952 - 1959 (served one term)
        3. Eamonn De Valera 1959 - 1973 ( " " " )
        4. Erskine Childers 1973 - 1975 (died in office)
        5. Cearbhaill O'Dhaligh 1975 - 1977 (resigned in a dispute
                                               with the gvmt.)
        6. Dr. Patrick Hillary 1977 - (serving a second term).

Snake remembers them all but the first one.

While it is doubtless accurate and the book referred to "A modest

re .314: 1491: It was not Charles VII, but his grandson Charles VIII
that Anne married. And it wasn't really to secure Breton independence,
but because she hadn't any other choice after the death of her father
Francez II of Brittany: she was too young, civil war was devastating
Brittany, and the French army was occupying most of it (maybe besieging
her, but I might be wrong there, my memory doesn't help very much).
She became one of the best queen of France, had to marry her husband's
successor and second uncle Louis XII after the untimely death of Charles
in an accident (not to remain queen, but because France didn't want
to let Brittany become independent again). To further secure Brittany
into France, her daughter by Louis, Claude, heiress to the province,
was later made to marry Louis successor and second nephew, Francis I.
This led to the famous 1535 (or was it 1532?) treaty between Brittany
and France, where Breton autonomy was guaranted. Francis I's son
by Claude and successor, Henri II, was the first king of France
to be duke of Brittany in his own right, and nobody ever heard of
    Breton autonomy afterward...

I know it's a bit unseasonal, but the company below is already producing

They do a bilingual English/Gaelic calendar entitled 'Am Miosachan Gaidhealach'
(The Highland Calendar) which has 12 attractive views of Highland scenery
in it. The captions to the photos, the months and the days of the week are
all bilingual. I have a copy of this. It was the nicest calendar I've
seen in a long time, and being in Gaidhlig too is a welcome bonus.

They also various other Scottish/Highland/Gaelic products - they have
a catalogue which is available free from the above address and they
deliver worldwide.
