703.0. "Data Load toolkit" by AZUR::BARES (Artigau, un pais pla betch) Thu Mar 27 1997 13:43
The NSIS CIS/VBO has developed as a project, a Data Load Toolkit for TeMIP.
All the network elements (global or child entities) which need to be managed by
the DLTT must be specified along with their attribute values in an ASCII file.
The DLTT automatically computes the modifications to this full topology file,
from the last processed full file. It updates TNS registration data and MIR
according to entity attributes. It assigns entities to collection domains, and
position entity icon in visualisation domains.
Being tailored to one customer, it has a number of limitations which prevents
it to serve as a base toolkit for customisation. A non-hexaustive list of these
limitations follow: all entities must hold the same attribute names, entity
hierarchy cannot go further than one level of child entities, collection domain
membership is only performed at entity creation, only icons are supported as
entity graphic representation.
The CIS is in the process of developing the next generation of DLTT for some
identified customer, and to overcome some of the first version limitations,
bringing opportunities in new functionalities.
We take the opportunity of this new version to get your comments on its
functionalities, and gather requirements for the future versions.

DLTT V2.0 Overview
==================
1 - Introduction
The DLTT provides the basic functions to automatically update TeMIP domains and
network elements topology. Some of the data necessary to perform the update are
unique to each TeMIP implementation (entity naming, domain membership, map
membership, managing director assignment). This information can either be
provided manually in the network elements topology description file, or
hard-coded in the DLTT (service offered along with the DLTT).
2 - System description
2.1 - Network elements and domains topology
The DLTT manages its own electronic representation of network elements data. It
expects these data to be located in a single place, and specified with a
dedicated format. Network elements data might be located in different
databases, or even not electronically stored. It is not the purpose of the DLTT
to gather and convert these raw data. The network elements topology file must
hold the full list of entities to be managed by the DLTT.
Collection or visualisation domains are pure TeMIP entities. Domain data must
be provided manually to the DLTT, in a single place, and specified with a
dedicated format. The domains topology file must hold the full list of domains
to be managed by the DLTT.
2.2. - Automatic topology delta computing
The DLTT automatically computes the changes when presented with the most
recent full domains or NEs topology file : addition, modification or deletion
of NE or domain.
2.3 - Topology update
Depending on the operation to perform on the entity/domain (addition,
modification, deletion) the DLTT updates registration and MIR data with the
entity and attribute values. It applies custom rules for global entity
naming and managing director assignment.
2.4 - Collection domain update
The DLTT updates collection domain membership (addition, deletion) for domains
and global NE entities. It applies custom rules for collection domain
membership association.
2.5 - Visualisation domain update
The DLTT updates domain map (addition, modification, deletion) for domains and
NEs with the graphical characteristics of the entity (co-ordinates,
graphic representation, color and width for lines).
It applies custom rules for visualisation domain membership retrieval.
Map co-ordinates are automatically computed, either from a geographical
position or from a grid layout.
