3822.0. "Celebris GL probs?" by DP1FS1::GATHERN () Mon Jun 02 1997 17:22
Hello,
I have 2 problems you may be able to help me with. I have recently
installed W95 on a Celebris GL5100 LP. It is a new system board and the
Bios version is 1.03 (although it states it is a 5100ST!), the problems
I have encountered are as follows:-
1) Unable to get more than 16 colours. The system states it has an OAK
Technology SVGA device, although further down the device manager list
is a big ? next to a PCI VGA compatible display adapter. I have read in
notes and stars, etc about installing the latest MATROX Millenium
driver, so I have got 16771341.exe to install asap. Will this fix my
problem??.
2) Unable to gt any sound at all from system, not even a squeak from
the speaker during the POST tests. I have plugged speakers and
headphones into the headphone socket on the system module and have been
deafened by the silence !!!!. I have seen on the parts list for the GL
an audio jack assy mentioned, are these the extra audio i/o that are
situated above the sockets on the system board. These are missing from
my system box, how vital are these to the audio operating correctly?.
Although I cannot understand why the onboard speaker remains silent. I
have the latest ESS Tech. drivers for the ess1688 audio, will this
help?.
I hope someone can help me with these little problems.
Dave.

3822.1 | some advice | EEMELI::HAUTALA | hel!, have our phone number | Tue Jun 03 1997 10:17 | 16 |

First: Check if there are any devices under Device Managers "unknown
devices" icon. I have experienced this when my customer had installed
Win95, but wrong way. These "unknown devices" reserve system resources
but they don't use any drivers. This can happen if PnP bios finds a
device and WIN95 install asks for driver (microsoft provided or
manufacturer provided) and that point is skipped (by not accepting any
driver).
Second: Some sound adapters do not give anything but silence if their
default volume settings are too low. Note that there are separate
settings for MIDI and SOUND. These volume settings are handled by
software that normally ships with sound board.

3822.2 | 256 colours from Matrox drvrs | DP1FS1::GATHERN | | Tue Jun 03 1997 11:15 | 9 |

Thanks for your input. I will play around with the sound settings
and double check IRQ's etc.
I managed to get 256 colours by installing the Matrox Millenium
drivers from the Matrox web site. Computers...don't you just love them!

| I've seen this problem in the last few days.
The problem is that Win95 has not picked up the
Matrox Millenium graphics card.
Remove the Oak display adapter and the unknown
PCI adapter and then install the Matrox drivers.

Grant
