3810.0. "Soundblaster and IRQs" by ANNECY::HOTCHKISS () Mon Apr 28 1997 09:56

    Here is a puzzle for PC experts.
    I have a soundblaster and win95.It will autoinstall OK and assign
    itself a config that works (IRQ5 etc - all the standard ones).
    I can usually play MIDI and wav files ok.Suddenly,it will stop playing
    wav files.If I then look at MSD (either under win95 or DOS),I see that
    IRQ5 is not detected but is assigned to LPT2(standard).
    If I then force the resource assignment to use another IRQ (like 10),it
    will work again and then after a couple of minutes it will stop playing
    wav again.Midi always seems to work.
    What on earth is going one here.Why can't it detect IRQ5 - maybe this
    is irrelevant though.
    Clues?

3810.1Plug and Pray!PCBUOA::WHITECParrot_TrooperMon Apr 28 1997 16:2011
    is the SB a plug and play type?

    And does your BIOS allow automatic assignment of Plug and play
    devices?

    Check out both of these.

    Sometimes its a matter of enabling/disabling IRQ assignments manually
    before it will work consistant.

    chet,
        It is an SB PNP and the BIOS is enabled for pnp.
    The strange thing is the sudden stopping.How come it can't identify an
    IRQ either?
    cheers

3810.3Can you return it for a normal SB?PCBUOA::WHITECParrot_TrooperMon Apr 28 1997 20:2713

    I'm not to familiar with SB PnP.....did it come with a ISA Config
    Utility? I know of someone that did get that card to work in an
    old ISA system 486/33 but it took a little time to try all
    combinations.

    can you HARD Lock the IRQ/Resources? If so, then do that. Set the
    IRQ to 5 or 7. And then to into Control Panel/System to see
    if DEVICE MANAGER shows any conflicts.

    Good luck,

    Yes,I can hard lock an IRQ and I chose 10 (which conflicts with the
    keyboard but who cares..).
    The system will then play sound for a while and then stop.
    However,it is not the card - all diagnostics and tests work fine.
