3793.0. "Venturis/AMDDX4100 problem" by SIOG::CORCORAN () Wed Feb 26 1997 14:46

    I recently upgraded a Venturis FP466 to a FP4100 by installing a
    486dx4100 AMD cpu(motherboard is 2nd version,54-24054-01)
    Bios is 2.01

    A strange problem occurs-If I make a bootable diskette using the SYS
    command, I get a "non bootable disk or disk error" when I try the
    bootable disk I just made.It will boot the same diskette from a Compaq
    ok.

    If I reinstall the 468-66 AMD original cpu,its ok, OR if I disable the
    internal cache when using the DX4100 cpu,it works!

    The AMD cpu is marked A80486DX4-100SVB.

    Any ideas before I start swapping the m/b,CPU etc.

    Jumpers for DX4100    -
    J9=2-3 in
    J14=off
    J15=on
    J35=off(this was the only change when going from DX266 to DX4100)

3793.2one more question.PCBUOA::LIBKINDSam Libkind - PC Support Engineering 276-9465Wed Feb 26 1997 15:427
    One more question.
    Would the 4100 system (with Internal Cache enabled) boot from a
    bootable diskette created on another sysytem?

    Sam.

3793.3Suggestion fro TAO BIOS groupPCBUOA::LIBKINDSam Libkind - PC Support Engineering 276-9465Thu Feb 27 1997 14:1614
    The following was suggested from TAO BIOS Engineering:

    >Hi Sam,

    > I am sorry to tell you that we cannot find a AMD 486DX4-100SVB
    > CPU to check out this problem right now. We have only Intel parts and
    > two AMD DX2-66 in the Lab.

    > We would like to suggest that J1 jumpper setting on the Colt
    > MLB be changed. Changing the cache write back/write through (J1) may make
    > some difference to the AMD DX4-100SVB CPU operation.

    Please try this suggestion and report the results

3793.4W1 cured it ok,DEC p/n also okSIOG::CORCORANMon Mar 03 1997 14:156
    Yes,moving jumper W1 to the "on" position cured the problem.

    As a matter of interest,the Dec part 54-23546-02 (the AMD 100 cpu with
    the attached regulator) didn't exhibit the problem.

    Thanks.
