What are the part numbers and chip numbers on the memory SIMMs? Please
post these numbers when you get a chance. Also, while you're in the
box, get the part numbers off the three large SIS chips (5511, 5512,
5513) and from chip E21 (the chip that's next to the CPU, cache and
SIMM sockets).

| Hi,
You might also like to virus check your floppies.
There is a common virus called 'boot parity', which gives this PARITY
CHECK message on intermittent boots!
It can be veryyyyyy time consuming to troubleshoot.
I seem to remember it wasn't seen by my F-PROT, but once I'd infected
my Laptop it got picked up by SWEEP for W'95.

3791.4 | Need additional information | PCBUOA::GKELLEY | | Wed Feb 26 1997 16:54 | 16 |
| Sorry to ask for additional information but I need all the markings on
each of the SIS 55xx chips, in particular the last line on the chip
will be the date code and stepping of the chip.
Also on the E21 chip, I need the markings that identify the vendor and
date codes.
On the memory, are these Digital memory SIMMs? When you get the
information, look for a Digital part number and then all of the part
numbers on one of the chips from each SIMM. Look to see if all the chip
numbers are the same.
Thanks,
glen kelley

[Glen's reply was a list of qualified vendors]
Bill,
This is not related to the subject of this topic, but I couldn't resist to
reply! The (major!) problem we're facing is that authorized resellers are
selling SIMMs to our customers, which are often non-qualified material!
But we can't tell from the SIMM whether it was sold by the reseller or bought
by the customer on the corner of the street.
It would be so easy to give the reseller our Qualified vendor list, so at
least he would be able to distinguish between qualified/ non-qualified.
But that is not allowed, since the list is confidential!
The end result is that MCS is replacing the non-qualified SIMMs, and get sent
to Nijmegen for 'repair', but all we can do is.... SCRAP!!!
However there is some positive news: we're trying to persuade manufacturing
(with some succes) to put a sticker on each SIMM. This sticker should
indicate that this is a qualified SIMM! (As long the PCBU is adhering to the
QVL as well....)
Sorry for breaking in to this topic with this issue, but as said I couldn't
resist....
regards,
_Wim_

| re: .10 by JGODCL::BLOEMENDAL
I agree with you wholeheartedly and I know the situation about which
you speak very well. I work with Glen and the engineer who originated
the list. Glen's reply is a quick way to get the info to the DIGITAL
internal people. A better sanitized list is in the works to be given
to those very resellers who are messing up the business through some
honest mistakes and some not-so-honest intentional substitutions.
Marking the SIMMs would be a start. This is a large problem that needs
careful attention to be paid by all levels and with policy driven by
the VPs.
Keep up the good work, Wim.
Cheers,
/Bill

| Hi
This is not a memory error.
The problem is when I put in 2 PCI card.
If I take out the DE450 it is no problem
or if I use ISA scsi card it is no problem.
Doesnt this PC supports 2 PCI card ??

| re: .12 by NETRIX::"[email protected]"
If you had used two identical PCI NIC cards, it would probably have
been easier to make that work. If I recall your configuration, you are
using two different cards that are supposed to use the same driver. It
should be okay, but maybe there's some difference in resource
assignment that the driver doesn't expect.
Have you tried installing the cards in a different sequence or removing
the cards in the software configuration and letting the system redetect
them?
I'm just hypothesizing...

| You may also be able to use a DE500-XA (but not the DE500-AA). We're
investigating this problem, but have been unable to reproduce the
failures. Would you be will to send a complete system to Engineering?
If you can pry a system away from the customer, it would help
indetermining the root cause for this. Let me know if you can (send me
an email).

Gentlemen,
As a reference I have also come across this same problem. The machine is also
a Venturis FX with a de450 and 2940. In fact any PCI card we put into the
machine, we get parity errors on boot up. All components in this machine have
been replaced. Due to time restrictions, and the customer being internal, we
have had to resort to using an ISA ethernet card.
