Well, kicked off the season with a spring-conditions backpack of the Kinsman Ridge Trail, south to north Lost River to Cannon Tramway. Deep snow. The book on this 16+ mile trip is 11-12 hours, but with full pack, and post-holing above 3000 feet, we did worse. The shelters at Eliza Brook and Kinsman Pond overflowed, as the whole area swarmed with hikers. Since the snow is deeper on the north sides, we were doing the easier direction. Thank goodness for the trees, or I'd want my crampons in a few spots, but as it is, you can lower down arm over arm on the icy spots. Even though much of this is the AT, it is easy to get lost. Take long undies - my thermometer read below freezing at night at the pond. If I'd thought of it, a foldup shovel would have come in handy. It was overcast with occasional drizzle. We never had blue skies. bb |
