333.0. "%RAID-F-ANREPERR and no report on a RAID ANAN/REPAIR" by ESSB::JNOLAN (John Nolan) Sat Apr 12 1997 09:55
I've a 4xRZ29 RAID set on an AXP2100 (OVMS V7.1), I'm running RAID T2.4
I noticed errors on one of the DU devices and ran RAID ANAL/ARRAY with
the output that follows, however RAID ANAL/ARRAY/REP does not make the
problem go away. All the DPA devices 'look fine'
Output of RAID ANAL/ARRAY ARRAY_1

| John,
can you run the /REPAIR in a batch job which creates a batch logfile?
Did you run a DCL ANALYZE/DISK against all DPA devices of this array?

333.2 | Caused by V2.3 leftovers - fix after V2.4 | COOKIE::FROEHLIN | VMS...riding into the setting sun! | Thu May 01 1997 15:01 | 30 |
| This is caused by a relict from previous V2.3 behavior. Let me explain
why we see this buggy behavior.
When a spare disk is initialized with RAID INIT/SPARE all blocks
in the RAIDable space are marked with a FE (force error) in the
meta data in this device's container file. Later on the spare is used
to replace a missing member. Trying to read from this member with
a FE flag set triggers an immediate reconstruct for this area.
Not all blocks in the RAIDable space are used. Depending on the chunk
size some blocks at the end are not used within DPA devices.
In pre-V2.4 code the FE flags remained set which was no problem.
In V2.4 the RAID REPLACE command clears out these extra bits so that
a RAID ANALYZE would not find these unused blocks with a FE tag.
If a RAID 5 array had been used under pre-V2.4 and a replace had been
performed these unused blocks have their FE flags still set and will be
reported by the V2.4 RAID ANALYZE. Since RAID ANALYZE uses the same
code to also do the repair we find these unused blocks with FE flags
and try a repair. Since the blocks do not match any DPA device nothing
is reported besides the general error status at the end.
RAID ANALYZE should not check for FE erros beyond the used space in the
container file. This will be fixed in the next version after V2.4.
Replacing such a member under V2.4 will clean-out these unused FE flags
and the symptom reported in .0 will disappear.
