312.0. "online mgmt s/w install on unix v4 asks for c++ libraries - not avail. 79823" by KERNEL::COFFEYJ (La Feline Flooz - a unix cat) Fri Jan 24 1997 09:58

Hi

I wonder if someone could at least give me a pointer here....

I've a customer trying to install online raid management s/w,
the swxcr on the same diskette (v1.1.1) installed ok, but the o-l mgmt s/w
refuses to install saying it needs C++ libraries installed first.

We can't imagine what it wants with them, but if it needs fair
enough. The problem is that the digital unix release notes
specify not to install c++ libraries on v4 systems (I wonder if
they're maybe already included wrapped in some other s/w
from v4 onwards?) and even if you wanted to disobey you can't
because the kits aren't on the cd.

Does she need a new raid s/w diskette?
Does she need the c++ lib.s installed?

If not, can we hack unix to think they're installed and just
put the appropriate SUBSET.lk file in /usr/.smdb.?

If so what should it's name be (ie: what is the raid s/w actually
checking for)?

thanks in advance for anything

This conference is for hosted based RAID software on OpenVMS. I
think you want to ask this question in SSAG::ASK_SSAG or the
DIGITAL_UNIX conference on TURRIS. I think the problem has
come up there at least once in one or the other, so a title
	search would be wise.

I'd guess that if it wants the C++ runtime, part of it is
probably written in C++. On earlier versions, the kit made
rather limited assumptions about what versions it would be
running on, but these were solved by creating the lock file.
I don't think this is enough for V4. It may just be that the
software needs a new version to run on V4.

Okey doke.

I noticed there were questions on NT so thought I'd be ok
and the digital unix conference had come up with nothing useful
looking when I searched on raid or c++. I'll try the
ask_ssag conference since you say it was in one of them.

I suspect so, but without a raid s/w person to tell me so I'm
struggling.

I'm unix s/w support... but it seems cause no-one else does
we support raid s/w too.

Thanks for the pointers,
sorry to sully a pure proprietary conference
with icky open stuff :-)

I always considered it slumming to wander over here from
conferences on more open conferences... But, Guenther asked.
