874.0. "units failover in 3.0 after battery failure" by EVTAI1::POUSSARD () Mon May 12 1997 08:15

	Hi,

I would ask for confirmation that units failover work correctly in HSOF
V3.0 when there is a low battery state on one dual redundant controller ??

	Thanks for your reply

Yes, it does failover, assuming that the other controller is in
perfect working order, good battery status, etc.

With open vms make sure that you have the latest pksdriver and
dkdrivers. I think they are dated april 97 as a link date.

	Hello Tom,

I read the hsof v3.1 release notes. Release notes described as "Low/
Failed battery on Dual-Redundant Configurations with Prefferred Paths".

Is this problem only occur at hsof V3.1 or also occur hsof v3.0?
Is this problem only occur at OpenVMS or also occur DigitalUNIX?

	Best regards.

the behavior is the same in both 3.0 and 3.1

the host system type has no effect, the behavior will be the same on
    unix or vms or wnt

    .2

    From:

    	HSZ50 HSOF V5.1 Release Notes (EK-HSZ50-RN.C01) March 1997
    and
    	HSZ40 HSOF V3.1 Release Notes (EK-HSZ40-RN.L01) March 1997

    I read:
"If a cache battery goes low or fails for a controller in a dual
redundant configuration and preferred paths are set, that
controller's unit's may go "AVAILABLE" on the "OTHER" controller
and INOPERATIVE on it. This causes a MOUNT VERIFY on the units
from OpenVMS. You will need to issue the SET unit-name
NOPREFERRED_PATH command which will allow the units to go out of
    	 MOUNTVERIFY....."

Q1: This is the expected behaviour for HSD's and HSJ's and the text
    	matches 100% those rel. notes.
HSZ's will shutdown it-self, forcing any units to failover to the
other controller. (Really works for HSZ40's HSOF V3.0Z, as I have
    	observed with a failed battery).
Q2: Do we have NEWER release notes, which have the CORRECT statement
    	for HSZ/Battery behaviour?
