1238.0. "Bad Batteries under V3.1 and PREFERRED_PATH" by KERNEL::LOANE (Comfortably numb!!) Mon Apr 21 1997 04:07
One of the major enhancements with HSOF V3.1 appears to be in the area of
WriteBack Cache Battery failure (and how the controller handles it). I was
under the impression that when a battery fails, that particular controller
crashes gracefully, thus causing failover of the devices it was mastering.
HOWEVER, the V3.1 release notes suggest that even after this failover,
drives/Raidsets may still be in Mount Verification if the drive/Raidset was
subject to Controller-Prefered Paths. So, customers will still suffer
`outages' due to bad batteries (albeit with a quicker resolution by setting
the disk/Raidset NOPREFERRED_PATH).
Is the above assumption correct??

| Never ASSUME...
Especially when talking about batteries! The only time you will get a crash
is when you are running dual controller SCSI. Since this is NOT the SCSI
conference you will not crash ;-.].
The whole thing is rather complex and I don't want to write a essay here to
describe it.
