1236.0. "Can't Quiesce HSJ40, V2.7J-0" by GIDDAY::HOBBS (Andy Hobbs. Sydney CSC. -730 5964) Wed Apr 16 1997 00:51

     Hi folks.

    I have a pair of HSJ40's which steadfastly refuse to quiesce.

     They are running fine and all I need to do at this point is
    to add three disks to shelf 2, but without a quiesce, I'm
    concerned that I might push RESETs down the bus if I just
    shove them in.

     Rebooting the two controllers one at a time hasn't helped.

     Advice ?

     Thanks.
     Andy/.

1236.1No problem just put them in.SSDEVO::RMCLEANWed Apr 16 1997 10:4710
1. You really should be running V27J-1.

2. You can just put the disks into the shelf. Don't worry about resets we
have fixed this problem since earlier versions of the software and async
insertions should be perfectly safe. It may cause the system a few seconds
to recover from the bus resets caused by the signals but that is not a fatal
error.

A lot of the problems with quiesce have been fixed in V3.1 which should
arrive soon...

     What about pulling them out again ?

     Re: Patch 1.

     No Writeback Cache installed. Does this patch do more than just
    change the battery test algorithm ? (I should've put more info in
    the basenote to avoid confusion - sorry).

1236.3You didn't tell me you had only a read cache!SSDEVO::RMCLEANFri Apr 18 1997 10:145
Ahh.... You didn't say that you only had read cache! That makes a BIG
difference especially when you remove drives. There should be no problems
in removing drives without writeback cache since there is no data stored
in the cache. Tis true in this case you don't need the patch since that
really only applies to cache modules with writeback option or raid 1/5.
