67.0. "Missing block could not be regenerated ..." by NQOS01::a-115.tunnel.crl.dec.com::ohfss1.ohf.dec.com::CHAPMAN () Mon Feb 10 1997 12:45

When copying a saveset we got the error

%SAVESET-I-MISSINGBLK, Missing block could not be regenerated in file

As you can see, it reports that the error is informational. The message
seems somewhat more inportant than that.

The copy reports success, showing one less block in the output saveset than
what was in the input saveset. There were no other errors reported.

Is this really a fatal condition?

A missing block that could not be regenerated is normally a fatal
condition that causes a saveset copy operation to terminate. The only
time when this is not the case is when you specify
    COPY/IDENTICAL/OVERRIDE.

The /OVERRIDE qualifier was designed as an "I know what I'm doing"
option, to allow you to copy a saveset that had unrecoverable errors in
it. Within this context, a severity of informational seemed
    appropriate.

The /IDENTICAL switch was specified, but not /OVERRIDE.

We copied the save set again. First with the /IDENTICAL switch and
/NOOVERRIDE. The same informational message was generated.

We then copied the save set with /NOIDENTICAL. The Save Set Manager
    reported that blocks were regenerated.

Does the Save Set Manager create a save set with a missing block (using
the /IDENTICAL switch), expecting that it can be regenerated during a
    restore operation.

    Jim,

I'm going to try to reproduce the problem here. I'll post a reply as
soon as I have more definitive info.

The summary information an the end of the copy operation shows
2 more blocks read from the old save set than written to the new
	one.

The original save set is a reel-to-reel tape. Are there extra blocks
at the end of tape/start of tape in a multi-tape set. Or how do I
	explain the difference.

This save set spans two reels of tape.

We really like the Save Set Manager. We have 10 years of backups
that need to be converted from reel-to-reel and TA90 and can not
imagine doing this job without a product like this. Well I can
	I just don't want to!

	Thanks

Note 67.4 wasn't related to this problem. I've moved it to it's own
    topic.
