283.0. "New user needs help!!!!" by MSBCS::GRADY () Mon Mar 24 1997 09:23

    Hello,

I am a new user of Dec Event and have the Analysis and Translation
manuals but am still confused, so if someone could help.

    I have 4 8400 Turbolsers running OSF 4.0b, ASE 1.4 and Dec Event 2.3.
A storageworks cab with 4 HSZ40s' and rz29 disks striped and mirrored.

I installed Dec Event and don't really know if it's monitoring the
the hardware and the level of severity I need. I set up the mail lists
    to go to root.

All I really want basically is any hardware failure that is detected on
these four nodes I get mail via root with some sort of analysis so
    I can address it.

When I did the setup I had auto analysis activated on all nodes.

    						Thanks in advance

    							Dennis

	Dennis,

You will get notification for those devices covered by Analysis. The 8400
has it, the SCSI devies do not.

Once a device with analysis coverage breaks a threshold, the analysis process
will check the database for information relatingto that device. If it can
generate a theory from the data available , it will send mail to the users on
the mail list. If SICL is enabled and DSNlink is installed and correctly set up.
It will send mail to your local CSC informing them of the failure.

We are adding analysis support with each new release.

When will there be support for SCSI device analysis?

We will have support for SCSI when we receive fault management specs
for the devices and can code them into rules. At this time there is no
set date for when scsi analysis will be available.

Perhaps I'm preaching to the choir but I'd like to underscore the
importance for scsi support/analysis. Especially since SCSI based
clusters across OpenVMS, Digital Unix and Digital Clusters for NT is
growing in numbers (along with configurational issues) There's
also Microsoft's Wolfpack product coming in the near future.
The ability to correctly interpret SCSI errors and bus issues
will be paramount to troubleshoot these products.

btw, will there be any support for 3rd party scsi products from
     adaptec, quantum, seagate, etc.

If the third party sutff looks exactly like our stuff then it might
work. I doubt . WE normally do not code third party devices ,since they do not
supply the information required to support the device.
