DIGITAL UNIX V4.0B
All other doc sets should be ordered from the SSB directly.

| What a shame !
As a Unix support engineer I found usefull to have the documentation
online, picking what I needed (for the respecting versions) in order
to tell customers precisely which chapters/pages they need to consults.
We cannot have complete documentation sets for each Unix version, this
consumes a lot of space which we don't have anymore 8-( !!!
Ok, so where is the pointer to v4.0B postscript Unix doc ?
Cheers,

As an old ORDS/oskits user, I am sorry to say that this seems to be a return to
the dark ages. I remember that ORDS was set up to avoid us in the field to wait
for SSB deliveries, and also to give access to some non-SSB information.
Postscript docs on ORDS/oskits gave access to a very valuable information,
in a decently printable format. Like Alain, I think we are loosing a valuable
tool.
Is the removal of ps docs a definitive decision ? or is it only a question of
disk space ?

387.5 | Some explanation | SMURF::WALLACE | Life's a beach, then you dive! | Wed Apr 16 1997 17:12 | 33 |
| re .4
>I remember that ORDS was set up to avoid us in the field

This concept has not changed. Webkits still provides
pre-deliverables to sites such as yourself. We will be
offering even more software than was possible with OSKITS.
>Postscript docs on ORDS/oskits gave access to a very valuable
>information, in a decently printable format.
Documentation in postscript format for DIGITAL UNIX operating
systems can be found under the documentation link on the WEBKITS
web page. Any product (OS, AP, or DOC) that has been delivered
to SSB for revenue shipping should be ordered directly from them.
OSKITS was never intended to become another SSB.
>Is the removal of ps docs a definitive decision
In short, past products that have been delivered to SSB, yes;
current products and recently submitted products to the SSB, no.
We intend to hold on to products as long as possible before we have
a need to recycle products due to disk space.
We are curious however, exactly which version of the postscripts you
are looking for?

387.6 | But it's only what's in CD distrib... | PANTER::MARTIN | Be vigilant... | Thu Apr 17 1997 09:10 | 22 |
| The documentation I found on webkits: looks to me what is
on the standard Digital Unix Distribution CDROMs !
And I'm trying to download it and it seems you transfert the
entire CDROM content (184860k) instead if selecting the book
you just need ! Time and space waste....
So there is very little added value, I guess most of us do have
the Unix distrib anyway !
Again what I found useful was the fact that I can have available
the complete Unix Documentation for all the versions ( I would
say that releases older that v3.0 are not anymore intersting...)
but if by any chance we miss a book (it disappered for some reason
you can imagine) we still have the oportunity to get a copy very
easily !!!
Hope you understand what we need in the field...
Cheers,

| No, not these, they are on the CDROM distrib !
What I might be looking for are the books from the
"System and Network Management kit" such as Kernel
Debugging, LSM, System Admin, System Tuning, etc.
As I said, some of these from our library disappeared
and we cannot afford to keep all of these for each
Unix version (not enough space...)
Thanks,

No.
To be clear: I am missing the postscript versions of the full doc set, the one
that can only be ordered on paper from SSB. By removing those files from OSKITS
and not putting them back on webkits, you made us loose a very valuable source
of information.

| Benoit is exactly right (hi Benoit, good to see you still around).
Our daily work often requires us to lookup some information for
some DU version and this info only can be found in the full
doc set. We by far have not the shelf space to held a single
(not to speak a full) copy of the full doc set.
