382.2 | Update Complete | SMURF::WALLACE | Life's a beach, then you dive! | Fri Mar 07 1997 11:28 | 2 |
| The WEBKITS update is complete. WEBKITS is now operating on a
DIGITAL UNIX V4.0B Operating System.
|
382.3 | New Download Strategy Implemented | SMURF::WALLACE | Life's a beach, then you dive! | Mon Mar 24 1997 07:55 | 18 |
| WEBKITS is now transfering gzipped tar images via httpd. Images are no
longer available via ftp from OSKITS.
Advantages:
- Faster download transfer rates
- Does not require building a distributed OS after unpacking the
image file
Please see the updated "HELP and FAQ" section on the home page for
details. In a nutshell, images are transfered as compressed gzip,
tar files. See the web pages for instructions on the command to unpack
the images. Once unpacked, the OS is ready for use. You no longer
need to build a distributed operating system for the 4.00 family of
products.
Send mail to [email protected] if you have questions.

382.3 | NEW Software Download Strategy | SMURF::WALLACE | Life's a beach, then you dive! | Tue Mar 25 1997 11:06 | 80 |
| Network distribution of DIGITAL UNIX Operating System and associated
products are NO LONGER available via anonymous FTP from OSKITS. All
DIGITAL UNIX software products must now be downloaded via WEBKITS.
WEBKITS is a Digital Equipment Corporation World Wide Web website
utilizing an HTTP user interface to download DIGITAL UNIX products
via common WWW browsers such as Netscape. For more information, surf
to the "Help, Info, and FAQ" web page on WEBKITS, at URL:
http://webkits.zk3.dec.com
1) Why did we change?
A) Security:
Some SDT's (Software Development Teams) require that only
selected individuals receive copies of their latest material.
Although restriction of software via FTP is possible, it is
much more cumbersome and difficult to manage than HTTP.
B) Transfer Rates:
HTTP transfers software faster than FTP. We have experienced
dramatic increases in download transfer rates here at ZKO, and
we hope this extends out to the rest of the world as well.
C) Slow Burn CD Production:
It is a goal of WEBKITS to dramatically reduce the number of
CDROM's created for a given product, especially during the
base level stages of development. The old OSKITS method of
FTP downloading required that we "burn" a "netkit" on a cdrom
and physically place it in a drive. Not that placing the
CDROM in the drive was a lot of work, but we were limited to
six physical drives which limited the products we are able
to distribute. The new WEBKITS model does not require us to
"burn" a cdrom for each product nor be limited by the number
of CDROM drives we have access to.
D) User Interface:
Yes, we UNIX guru's have no problem using anonymous FTP to
download our bits, but it does require a bit more specialized
knowledge than simply clicking on a link from a web page. To
keep up with "ease of use" philosophies and to ensure we
reach as wide an audience as possible, it makes sense for us
to take advantage of the web and create an easy to use and
navigate method of downloading our software products.
2) Enough of the politics...what's in it for me?
A) Faster Transfer Rates:
Although network traffic dictates the transfer rate, we hope
you will experience a decrease in download time due to the
nature of HTTP transfering bits quicker than FTP.
B) gendisk...NOT!
It is no longer required that you use the 'gendisk' tool to
build a distributed pseudo-cdrom from the subsets that you
use to download via FTP. You will still download a compressed
tar image and need to "unpack" it with gzip(1) and tar(1),
however once this is complete, you are ready to use the
product "as is" unless there are other specific instructions
for that particular product.
C) More Reliable Downloading
We will soon be able to offer the option of downloading the
product image in "chunks" rather than in one large tar file.
If you've ever had a download interupted, you know you have
to download the entire image all over again. "Chunk-loading"
will allow you to retrieve only those parts that didn't make
it the first time, instead of starting all over again.
(NOT YET IMPLEMENTED)
3) How do I get there, from here?
Point your browser to http://webkits.zk3.dec.com and follow
the links to information or downloading of products.
4) I've got questions; who's got the answers?

382.6 | Mirror Sites Wanted | SMURF::WALLACE | Life's a beach, then you dive! | Mon May 05 1997 10:22 | 9 |
| Full support is now available for sites that are willing to mirror
downloading from WEBKITS. The system requirements are located at
http://webkits.zk3.dec.com/ords/msr/. This is an "active" mirroring
system which means you control which bits you want to mirror by
downloading the compressed image file and then using the web based
form to register your site.
As usual however, should you need help all you need to do is let us
know and we'll be happy to help set you up.

382.7 | 'scuse our appearance | SMURF::WALLACE | Life's a beach, then you dive! | Tue May 06 1997 12:56 | 5 |
| Please bear with us as we change the product pages graphics so we
can get "just the right" UI look and feel.
You will always be able to get to the software, you just might have
to "click" differently to get there.

|
382.9 | | SMURF::WALLACE | Life's a beach, then you dive! | Mon Jun 02 1997 14:28 | 8 |
| We've converted to frames based HTML on webkits. If your browser does
not support frames, send mail to [email protected] and we'll get you
one that does. In any event, non-frame supported browsers should
automatically revert to a non-frames interface.
Send mail to [email protected] if you have any problems with this
new format.
