380.0. "4.1 date?" by CAMINO::MCDERMOTT () Wed Feb 12 1997 14:15

What is the schedule for future V4.x releases? I'm curious when
    4.1 will be available.

    thanks

380.1I don't believe any firm dates have been set yetXAPPL::MASINICKBrian Masinick, DTN 381-0013Mon Feb 17 1997 14:3231
For Digital UNIX, as far as I know, the only dates that have been firmly
established are the dates for the maintenance releases, eg. V4.0A has been
out for some time, I think V4.0B is either out now or soon to be available,
and V4.0C is currently under development, but is not scheduled to ship for
several months.

Steel planning has not even been finalized yet, so I cannot imagine any firm
dates being available. But talk has not even been for 1997 - I think, unless
things change (and anything is possible), that a 1998 delivery date will be
most likely - but I'm not Product Management, so I don't make those decisions.

As far as version numbers go, I thought Steel was gonna be called V4.2. That
leaves room for a V4.1 somewhere in between these V4.0{A,B,C...} releases and
what we've been calling Steel. If there is a Steel-Lite in the works, I am
not aware of it yet, but the naming and numbering scheme leaves room for such
an occurance.

If you have a definitive reason to know something, besides speculation of the
sort that I am giving you, then you should use the proper channels and contact
Digital UNIX Product Management. Sarah Booth is the manager of the UNIX Base Products
Group Product Management (unless I'm out of date). Kent Ferson is the manager of
the entire organization (engineering and product management), and reports to Don Harbert
at the V.P. level. You can hunt down one of those chains for the person(s) you
might need to get information from. Start on http://www-unix.zk3.dec.com/home.html
to search for more information. Use ELF, http://www-elf.bb.dec.com/ or the employee
browser at http://truth.ogo.dec.com:8001/scripts.emp_www/ to look for who works for who.

That ought to give you more than enough weapons to get the information you need,
assuming you have the time, need, and desire to go get it. Good luck!

Not that you shouldn't follow the recommended official PM channels
    for release info, but...

V4.0a and b are both long ago released. A release called
V4.0c is underway exclusively for new hardware support.

Another release that we're now calling PTmin is in its 5th
baselevel of ? baselevels. It was scheduled for June-July.
as V4.0D, but it has become the vehicle for features that
have to reach the street well before Steel is scheduled to ship.
So, it looks like PTmin may be drifting out to Q4CY97 to pull
    in some of these features.

I don't believe any of this is completely settled, even what the
version will be called -- V4.0D, V4.1? It's business as usual here,
really. And this is just my completely unofficial take on the
    state of things.

    Thanks for the info.

One piece of breaking news -- the PTmin release has been named
    V4.0D not V4.1.
