| I think it is wise to remember that talent, while needed somewhat to
"get started", is not the primary reason for "success" as a musician.
Success is based on what level of satisfaction the musician wants to
get out of his craft. It can range from personal enjoyment to playing
solo with the Los Angeles Philharmonic or just making a decent living
playing small concerts. The word talent is overrated and plays a lot
less in the equation of success than most people think.
What is talent for a musician anyway.........
Is talent playing in really playing in tune or playing "in tune" with
a church organ that is a quarter tone flat?
Is talent showing up on time for a concert?
Is talent playing Brahms Symphony No. 2 for the 10th night on tour and
still enjoying it?
Is talent playing when you are sick and there is a "no substitution
policy" in effect?
Is talent schlepping your instrument through a snowstorm to a concert
hall that has no heat or practicing hours upon hours in a hot room with
no air conditioning.
The list goes on.....
In my opinion the factors involved in being a successful musician are
same found to be successful in any other profession; hard work,
dedication, source of income while going to school and a
someone giving you a break when you really need it.
I personally know many musicians who are way more "talented" then most
but are not nearly as successful becuase they think talent is all they
need to get them through.
Making a living as a musician or just playing at a high level for your
own enjoyment is just plain hard work. Where is the reward in hard
work? That is question for which the answer is different for all.
