Hmmm, I know this is an old note...but isn't it interesting that no one
picked either Handel or Schubert (Is there anything to equal the
Staendchen Op. 135?)? Or Berlioz, for pure innovation (In 1830 -- or was
the first performance in 1833? -- the Symphonie fantastique must have hit
the musical world like a megabomb)...

When this string started I wouldn't go near it...

In the interim though, I went through an exercise of creating a CD library
of "MUSICIAN HEROES, FOREFATHERS, AND FAVORITES" for my kids. Here's what
I came up with (a couple of years ago).

The "music box" entry is really a tribute to a music box in a relative's
house that has 10 wonderful selections (mixture of 19th century
instrumental, choral, and operatic airs) and first sparked my interest in
classical music (now 35 years ago).

And, a way to avoid selecting among the "Alsos" listed for the last spot. 8)

Just a comment, as this string is active again. Two years have gone by
since .0 was posted here, and I've yet to hear anything on the media to
suggest that the BBC actually made the planned programmes. Maybe the
whole idea was shot down in flames.
