141.0. "civil war costumes" by MSBCS::GARDNER () Fri Apr 04 1997 15:40

I noticed this conference has not been too active lately, but I am
hoping someone will wonder through and be able to help me.

My daughter worked at Gettysburg last summer and is returning this
summer to portray Mary Walker, MD. (Last summer she did tours with
the park service, this summer she is doing the living history part
    of the program)

Is there a place in eastern Mass, RI, Conn. or southern NH that make
    civil war costumes.

    Any help - thanks!

My wife and I have been involved in CW re-enacting for about 4 years.
In our travels, we found you have to be extremely careful about who
you hire to do the work. That goes for both male and female costumes.

The seamstress my wife uses is located out in Sylvania, Ohio. Her name is
Judith Martin. I highly recommend her. She designs and sews all the costumes
for the House of Seven Gables in Salem MA. She is as honest as the day is
long. We should know, we've been burnt before by others in this field. Her
prices are high if you compare them to today's fashions but anyone will tell
you that this is an expensive hobby. Oh by the way, there is no such thing
as a cheaply priced CW costume, only cheaply made. This is where Judith
excels. Her quality of fabrics, sewing skills and finishing work are second
to none. Expect to wait from 2 to 4 months for the finished product. This
is typical for any seamstress doing this line of work.

Her phone number is 419-474-2093. She has a catalog of her own patterns but
she can work from a photograph or picture. She will mail you swatches of
fabric based on your choice of colors.

Well, I'm all talked out. Take Care and Good Luck.

Thanks, I will look into this. Also thanks for the warning re:
authenticity. I was talking to a friend and he said he knew someone
who made costumes, for Revolutionary War Re-Enactors, but the costumes
were off by about 25 yrs.
