137.0. "G/G grandfather was in the battle of Spotsylvania." by SALEM::PERRY_W () Tue Apr 02 1996 08:38

I have been doing geneological research and found out that my gr/gr
grandfather was in the civil war and was wounded at the battle of
Spotsylvania. I will be visiting the site this summer hopoefully
so need any advice from any one who has been there. What to look for,
any records of the battle that may reference my g/g grandfather.
His name was Felix McGettrick. He was in the Vermont Sharpshooters.
2nd Brigade? Thanks for any help!
                                              Bill Perry

I was at Spotsylvania last week! You can goto the visitor center
in Fredricksburg and ask for information, they have a book of names
there, and provide information on this. I'm not sure now if the book
of names was everyone who died there or just those who are buried there.
The visitor center is located in Fredricksburg next to the cemetery where
many Federal soldiers are buried. (sight of Marye's Heights).

Anyway, if you have a full name (first and last), and a state, you
will be able to get some info! They also provide forms you can fill
out and send to the govt to get what info they have.

Spotsylvania is located about 10 miles away. You can spend 2 days
in the area and see all 4 battlefields and also the house where
Stonewall Jackson died. Manassas is 30-40 miles from Fredricksburg,
you can drive there and make a day trip out of it.

If you want I can provide a few places to stay in Fredricksburg.
