131.0. "The Naval War on the Oceans" by SMURF::BINDER (vitam gustare) Wed Nov 16 1994 09:37

The December 1994 issue of National Geographic Magazine has a good, if
somewhat short, article on the C.S.S. Alabama, which was sunk by the
U.S.S. Kearsarge off the coast of Cherbourg, France. The Alabama's
wreck has been found 200 feet down, and archaeology is ongoing. Some
nice pictures, and an encomium for the ship and her crew.

Alabama's motto, as found on a bronze ring from the steering wheel, was
"Aide toi, et Dieu t'aidera," which means "God helps those who help
    themselves."

I'd love to get a copy. Any suggestions how one obtains a single copy
    of the magazine?

    Thanks, Ed

I don't know with certainty, but I'm willing to bet that a good book or
magazine store, such as Barnes and Noble, will have it on the shelves.
Also, check your public library; if they have it, you can find phone
    numbers or addresses to ask.

131.3CSS Hunley found?SMURF::BINDERFather, Son, and Holy SpigotMon May 15 1995 11:428
National Public Radio reported last week, on its All Things Considered
program, that a group of naval archaeologists/historians think they
have found the CSS Hunley, which was the first submersible to sink an
enemy warship. The hulk is lying in waters off South Carolina, and
further measurements and investigations will be made to ascertain if it
    really is the Hunley.
