126.1Politician or Cigar?WMOIS::MACK_JThu Jun 23 1994 11:418
     I believe he was a Politician in either the Senate or the
    House of Representatives shortly before the Civil War.

      Now, there's also a brand of Cigars called "Henry Clay"

      About all I can remember.

126.2Great man. Very great.SMURF::BINDERetsi capularis ego vita fruarFri Jun 24 1994 09:1015
    Henry Clay was an American statesman, one of the true greats. He was
    born in Virginia. Before the War of 1812, he represented Kentucky in
    the Senate, filling two unexpired terms despite his being under the
    legal age. He later served in the House on his own hook.

    He was one of the "War Hawks" who advocated war with Britain in 1812.

    After the war he returned to the House. He was then Secretary of State
    under J. Q. Adams. He ran against Jackson for the presidency, and he
    worked to reinstate the Second Bank of the United States, over which
    Nicholas Biddle had so many problems with the goverhment. :-)

    He continued to serve in the Senate, off and on, until his death in
    1852. He was known as "The Great Compromiser" for his ability to
    mediate between the North and South over the slavery issue.

    	If my memory is correct, he was one of the architects of the
    Compromise of 1850, called the Missouri Compromise.
