Thought I'ld create a topic to discuss the show "Civil War Journal" which has been airing on the A&E (Arts & Entertainment) cable channel lately. It is show Wednesday Night and Sunday afternoon. The host and narrator is Danny Glover. I like the show (I've seen maybe 5-6 episodes) ! I find it always comes up with a few facts or stories I haven't heard about. Like this past Sunday's show. It was called "Flags of Glory" and was about the creation and use of various battle flags, from guidons to national flags, on both sides of the Civil War. Some interesting tidbits: o The US (Northern) National flag had no official symetrical positioning of the stars within the canton (the blue section). It was up to the manufacturer of the flag to align them any way he pleased. o Some Union generals (notably George A. Custer & Phil Sheridan) created their own flags for their personal unit's use. Custer's was the famous crossed-sabres on a flag with dual points. o Regimental and Corps flags were popular with the Northern Armies (the famed trefoil of the Irish Brigade) but not so in the Southern Armies. o Although I knew that the so called 'Saint Andrews Cross' Confederate Battle Flag was not the 'official' Confederate National Flag, I didn't know that it was somewhat indigenous to the Eastern Armies of the Confederacy. The Western Armies used a blue flag with a single white circle in it for their battle flag. There were other flags in use in the Trans- Mississippi department.
